An extremely large structure vandalised by spray cans which detracts. But, it doesn't yield its double life on a visit. During the war the block work was a bunker for 650 persons but there is no information available on site. There is one solitary metal door evident. A fenced tennis court covers the rear aspect. A workman was removing graffiti when we visited.

This monument to Bismarck in Hamburg is not the only one. The other two stand in the Schleepark and Bergedorf. There Bismarck was wearing a Prussian pointed helmet and holding a sword. Here he is sculpted in the image of Roland. This is the idea of the sculptor Hugo Lederer, a famous official German sculptor who has another monument to the iron Chancellor in Barmen (now Wuppertal). Lederer and architect Schaudt's design was chosen from 239(!!!) of the submitted projects. It is not very clear what Lederer meant by identifying Bismarck with Roland. Direct analogies don`t fit. Roland is the hero of the French epic, and Bismarck defeated France in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871. Perhaps Lederer`s idea was based on the popularity of Roland in Germany as a symbol of urban self-government (remember the famous monument to Roland in Bremen, which became a UNESCO heritage). But the Prussian dictatorship of Bismarck, on the contrary, severely restricted German freedoms. Questions.... In General, Bismarck turned out to be large, the largest in Germany and the world. Of the total height of the monument in 34 meters on the Bismarck account for 14.8 m. 100 granite blocks from the distant Schwarzwald went to the manufacture of 600-ton monument. Bismarck played a positive role for Hamburg. During War II. But not the statue itself, but the pedestal. A bomb shelter for nearly 1,000 people was equipped there. It saved many lives during operation Gomorrah, when the entire center of Hamburg and more than 50 thousand civilians of the city were burned by allied aircraft. The shelter served as a flophouse after the war, and is now closed. The iron Chancellor is daubed with graffiti mercilessly. Without any respect for the historical merits of the unification of Germany "by iron and blood (Blut und Eisen)..

This monument stands in tribute to Otto von Bismark, the Prussian statesman who engineered the unification of the desperate German states into the German Empire.

This monument is a sculpture of truly monumental proportions at 35 metres high, it’s the world's largest Bismarck monument. The sculpture depicts Bismark standing upright, almost at attention. He is holding a sword with the point resting on the ground and both his hands are holding onto the handle of the sword.

It’s a pity the monument is defaced graffiti.

Really surprising that majority of all landmarks are looked after and then there is this one which has been left to decay away and there is graffiti all over the place which is a shame.

Although this monument is huge in size, it is unfortunately kept in a state of decay by the authorities.
It is covered with graffiti and doesn't seem to be given much love.
The statue itself is rather interesting, standing on top of a hill close to St Michael's Church.
At the time of visit, they were rebuilding the stairway leading up to it so it was only accessible from one side.

A huge statue placed in the middle of a central park. Impressing by its size, otherwise it hasn't anything special. Not a must see.

It seems to be boarded up, as if you could do that to a massive statue.

The boards, base, and statue itself are defaced with graffiti. It seems the authorities are waiting to do some sort of restoration.

This is an impressive statue, but has been poorly neglected, the area around it is litter strewn and the statue base covered in graffiti, please give it some care and attention

Very large and impressive monument to Otto Von Bismarck but completely neglected, covered in graffiti and partly fenced off. I read somewhere that Hamburg is Germany's most prosperous city, so why don't they clean this up? The statue is very close to St. Michael's Church.

This monument kinda describes most of the city of Hamburg. The statue's base is covered in ugly graffiti, lots of broken glass from beer bottles (both party- and homeless people are to blame) and no real background describing the statue.

The city of Hamburg has a littering/graffiti problem and doesn't seem to care much about it. Very sad actually..
