After strolling down the Landungsbrücken quay and a doing the harbour tour, many visitors to Hamburg simply hop on the metro to get back to the earnest business of shopping. Just behind the harbour however lies a charming small neighbourhood that is typical of Hamburg, yet completely unique at the same time. The centre of Hamburg's sizeable Portuguese and southern European community since the 1960s, the Portugiesenviertel consists of just a handful of streets around the Ditmar-Koel-Straße in the Neustadt district that are home to over a dozen Portuguese restaurants, bars and pastelarias. It's the best place in Hamburg – some say in Northern Europe – to sample authentic tapas, delicious fresh seafood dishes and tasty Portuguese wines

We lived nearby the Portugese Quartier in Hamburg and visited several times. Worst was Saturday night where huge crowds filled the streets walking from one bar/restaurant to the other. It was like the early days of charter tourism, unauthentic, industrial , noisy and predictable. All (or almost all) restaurants serve factory food, fast, with no flavour and to high prices. Avoid this place, please.

Went a few times, morning coffee and snack, late afternoon drinks and evening meals. Easy going area, good natured and laid back, interesting couple of nautical shops, nice to sit outside bars and drink good wine. Evening best time to visit

Every time when I'm in Hamburg I visit this area. Good Restaurants for different money. Better to be there in summertime or Harbour-Birthday (full and a lot of really nice action around) come and enjoy this lovely part of Hamburg. Closed to the haven-city area and fully different.

Portugiesenviertel, or the Portuguese quarter of Hamburg, offers you a bevy of restaurant options to choose from.
You can savor the best of cuisine from Portugal, Brazil etc.
My personal favorites eateries were Casa Madeira - the grilled salmon in crab sauce in particular - and D. Jose.
