A mess of a city where the pedestrian is given least right of way.
Public transport isca shambles of diversions and non-integration. Cyclists are dangerous and ride on shared pavements at high speed expecting one to jump out of the way.
We arrived by train from Amsterdam. DB is dreadful. The German trains are seriously late and they expect you to be able make connections in 4 minutes.
At one point the ICE DB train was so late the driver stopped for lunch after crossing the German border.
A dreadful journey. Never travel by DB. Even their train booking system is a mess.

I really enjoyed the tour with the sailing Company we choksejr by coinsidence. We West to the harbour with the mighty Big containerships, had a beer on the deck, and heard a lot of funny stormes from the german tour guide. If You dont understand german, the trip is still perfect.

I visited Port of Hamburg on a bus tour and reality was beyond expectations. Never thought industrial sightseeings would be so astonishing.
Tour is perfect for rainy days, as there is limited walking options, while Port of Hamburg in a rainy, misty day is something magical and mystical, at the same time.
Totally recommended!

My boyfriend and I decided to go with a small boat tour with Kapitän Prüsse (I don't know if they offer English language tours as we did it in German). It was a small boat with at most 50 people on board and we went all around the harbor area as well as out to where the cargo ships (un)load all of their stuff. It's really fascinating to see these enormous ships just doing their thing, especially from the point of view of a tiny little boat. I wouldn't say it's exactly "beautiful," considering it's very industrial, but it certainly is part of the history and economy of the area and thus super interesting. If you go on a boat tour, make sure to not sit where there's glass because then pictures are harder to take. However, be prepared on a smaller boat to get a little wet if the waves are big

A busy working port with cruise ships, container ships and the ferries. Then there are the local ferries which are a great way to get around and very cheap too. Near Landsbrucken there are loads of restaurants and bars to drink and eat on the water front, although very busy with footfall

Spent a lovely relaxing two hours just strolling along the promenade, watching the boats and gulls. Interesting to see the heart of Hamburg - the Elbe.
Easy to get to on the train and plenary of places to have a coffee and a bite to eat.
Would highly recommend this breath of fresh air away from the busy city.

Starting at Metro Station Überseequartier, it is a wonderful walk down the canals, along the buildings, while overlooking the ships, to Elbphilarmonie and the Elbpromenade. I suggest you take time to stroll, have a drink or a "brötchen" on the way, to experience "local life".
Children loved it too, plenty of strange things for them to look at on the water !

Busy place and lot's of harbour boat tour offer however very few offer English guide. We had to ask before purchase the ticket. At the very end of the molo was the only one with English service. The tour was nice and long enough.

A very busy place. There is everything here. You could take an afternoon stroll till your heart desires. You could take a ferry to helgoland or other outer islands. you could sit at a cafe and watch the passersby. You could have a romantic dinner with your other half. Or even take a show at the Elbephilharmonic! This is such a wonderful place.

This port is huge, one of the most important in Europe, and a vital part of the local economy. It has many areas and many features. We were here on a cruise ship and stopped in the Altona port area, which is small, and noted for the fish market. There is a huge new port development in Hafen City. Some dramatic architecture around the port.

Viel Spass.

can someone reccomend english speaking tours of hamburg they have done?
Written 30 October 2016
They do have. There are yellow and red boys representing different companies. Just google Hamburg free walking tours and then you'll find them. Depending where you are you can either go to Landungsbrücke or to the Rathaus. Check 11/ 13/14 o'clock free walking tour guides. 😊

Suerte y buen viaje.
