This was my third visit to the Museum, the second since its revamp. This is an essential museum for anyone interested in German Cinema and especially UFA, DEFA and the films of the DDR and the Babelsberg Studios since unification. As a lifelong enthusiast for moving image, and lecturer in Film & TV Studies, I always find it too much to take in on one visit. It has also been streamlined to highlight a number of key films since the revamp - I miss the Heisse Sommer clips!
If you are not fluent in German, like me, than the temporary exhibitions will have less pull which is a shame because these are well presented and varied in my experience. For the main exhibition I would allow at least 4-5 hours. You can leave the museum and return on the same day with your ticket. There is a lot here that unless you know German Cinema will pass you by, but always a new surprise on every visit.
It's always been quiet when I've visited which in one sense is a blessing, but a great shame in terms of people missing out. There is now a restaurant/cafΓ© next door which is mid priced by Potsdam standards (8-12 euros for mains), cheap by London ones. I much prefer a Turkish Imbiss up the road, but the restaurant looks perfectly fine.
Access from Berlin is by S Bahn, but do consider the regional trains - less frequent - form Alexanderplatz, Hauptbahnhof, Freidrichstrasse, Charlottenberg, which only take 30 mins, from the centre of Berlin. Also don't miss out on the rest of Potsdam, it is a very pleasant town.

Before this visit I wasn't aware of Babelsberg Film Studios but following this museum I was far more aware of it and it's output. Great museum, very clear, clean and takes you through all sorts of the background to movies. There's also a small reproduction of a 1920's cinemsa when you see quick excerpts of films made at babelsberg. If you're into movies it's a must

The entrance of the museum consists of a walk among mirrors - so you can actually see yourself (and others) in every mirror in the room , quite fascinating and very clever. We saw the Martin Scorsese exhibition which was very interesting.

You really need endless time to enjoy all the information you can find at Film Museum, Potsdam. I was interested in Babelsberg Studio history, so I focused on one not so big room full of photos, audio information, pieces of old film equipment (this technology revolution in film is great!), even make-up belonged to the film stars of the past. I wanted to watch DEFA movies too, but I really missed time. Need to be back soon!

Visited Potsdam on Feb 2016, mainly to see Sans Souci Park and Palaces. On my return to the airport I stumbled across this beautiful building which turned out to be the Film Museum. I was guided around by a charming and knowledgeable young guide, in flawless t. Without this, the museum would have been interesting, but I quickly realised an hour was too little to see the museum anything other than superficially. The attached cafe/bar is also interesting. Hope I return to give it a better go!

This was one of our must visit places during our stay in Potsdam. The ground floor of the building has a permanent exhibition with many audio visual displays - it would be easy to spend a whole day watching film snippets. At the far end of the ground floor there is a small cinema showing a film compilation made up of a plethora of material from different films - very entertaining.
The first floor houses a special exhibition. During our visit the focus was the Olsenbanden - previously unknown to us - but again some great film clips.
Although the building is old - and there is stepped access to the entrance - there is a lift between the floors, but well hidden. Do ask at the reception desk if this is required.
This museum is definitely worth a visit.

Movie making can be likened to flirting with one or more cameras aimed at you where you are trying to show off your best or worst sides or brightest or saddest moods in a make believe or realistic setting - dramatic, comedy, or something in between, on a set or on location.
"Silence, and action ......and cut" and so it goes a collection of short segments combined together to produce the tear jerker or belly laughter, anger or happiness.
This is where the Filmmuseum Potsdam comes in set as it is so close to where momentous decisions were being made that would impact the world for decades to come.
The various collections are housed in a permanent and a feature collection sections over two floors. There is a line up of about the 20 best known male German stars and likewise 20 best known female German stars, from the earliest to current times. On one side you see the stars as young and on the other side as much older.
There is a camera equipment and stage sets and costumes exhibitions on one side of the hall and on the other side a collection of posters, photos, posters and other memorabilia.
The beauty of such museums is that one can come to a particular exhibit and contemplate what happened real time when the movie was being shot.
There is an attached full sized (like the large olden type cinemas) cinema showning movies and you can wander in and out from museum proper to cinema as your fancy takes, being careful not to disrupt other patrons.
A lot of effort goes into making movies and especially to make them look effortless in final product. The techniques and equipment and stories of the people who made and make movies are a rich source of cultural introspection that particularly foreigners can appreciate.
Go see the way movies were and are made and let your imagination loose.
And action Greg J

This museum is really great - not just for enthusiasts of German (and GDR) films, but really for everyone.

The pink facade of this massive structure was definitely attention getting as we drove past on our way to the "old town" Christmas market. We went on a Sunday and believe it was closed but it is definitely an impressive palatial structure and photo worthy.
