The Bremen's Roland statue is a symbol of civic liberty and freedom; a protector image for the town, a historical treasure and an attraction to those who want to add it to their UNESCO world Heritage collection lists. I am an enthusiast in history and...More

Roland was a historic person, who died in the service of Charlemagne about 744 AD during a battle in the Pyrenees - between Moorish Spain and Francia (land of the Franks - eventually to be known as France). Everything else is legend. Over time Roland...More

Great statue and well worth seeing. Lots of people milling about in the square this afternoon so it wasn't easy getting the perfect picture. Well worth visiting this statue.

Its been over 24 years since our last visit and Roland needs some tender care and cleaning but still a great statue of the protector of the town. A must see when in town.

The large statue of Roland was erected in the Bremen Marktplaz in 1404. He was a warrior of the first Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne and is said to be the “protector of Bremen city”. It’s quite impressive and very well preserved to be that old.

It's amazing that this stone stature survived WWII, much less thousands of years. It's right opposite the Cathedral - in the Town Square.

If you are at the centre of Bremen you cannot miss this statue. It is the heights Roland statue of all the statues that are existing. Between the two spills of his legs is an old length measurement.

As I understand it, the Roland Statue is over 600 years old. It was placed there as a symbol of freedom and trading rights. Besides the Rathaus, it is under UNESCO World Heritage Site protection.
