The area
Neighbourhood: Friedrichshain
When you arrive at Warschauer Strasse in the heart of the district, you have found one of Berlin’s party hotspots. At night in Friedrichshain, the energy is palpable and the streets of this old worker's quarter are full of street musicians. On one hand, you may find a bar with international crowds, electronic music, long lines and panoramic views - on the other, an outside venue by old train yards featuring decrepit buildings and live alternative music. No matter your taste, the best way to end a night out in Friedrichshain is sitting by the Spree River at the East side gallery, the longest and best preserved piece of the Berlin Wall, watching the sun rise over the beautiful Oberbaum Bridge.

Residential area, quite laid back and chill, some nice eateries and one nice park. Good area for a restful hotel stay. The hip neighborhood is just across the Spree, Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain.

The neighborhood is presented on many sites as a pearl of contemporary art and nightlife. We, I admit, have only been there during the day and therefore we cannot say anything about nightclubs. The neighborhood itself is huge, so very dispersive. It was a pleasant walk, especially the Boxhagener platz, but I must say I expected better.

Definitely Friedrichshain! Although Kreuzberg has some nice areas and good options to hang out. I prefer the compact neighbourhood of F'Hain with it's small but wonderful Boxhagener Platz park as the highlight of the 'kiez' like Berliners would pronounce. A surplus that this part of the city isn't completely yuppified, so that means F'hain compromises a large chunk of the alternative scene in Berlin, and due to a huge student population, rents are in this part of Berlin relatively cheap. Ideal for low-key expats :-)

This was my favourite part of Berlin - so trendy and rough and ready. Lots of grafitti, market stalls, ethnic cafes and restaurants. We stayed at A and O Hotel Friedrichshain - we loved it. Right in the centre of a little area - with fabulous pubs serving super strength beer (smoking allowed!), a pizzeria, kebab shops, Whole Foods Market, Lebanese Cafe, Patisserie, various pubs, chemists and a Lidl - all on a tram line and next to Ostbahnhof. Recommend Simon Dach Strasse and Boxhagener Platz market. Not tourist-y at all. Well worth staying here for your stay. All transport is amazing and 5 mins from Alexanderplatz. Feels like the REAL Berlin. :)

There's loads of nice bars and cool people in the area of Friedrichshain. Here you can find bohemian bars where they sell a Staropramen for a mere 1.5 and where people still have a personality.

If living here or just staying at the hotel F.hain is a great are to walk through.
If you like eating out it is a great option for you. If you are not lazy and like walking you will find great spots in many of the streets around.
Prices are good and you have a huge choice what to eat around.
It is also quite quick to get to a city center from here.

This was a great find! Particularly Simon Bach Strasse which has a full road of pubs and restaurants on either side - great choice. The prices here are also a lot less then in central Berlin or around Alexander Platz.

Simon-Dach Strasse felt a lot like Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Great shops and restaurants for an enjoyable afternoon.

We had read that this neighbourhood was a lively one, full of bars and cafes. Well, there were some cafes but the truth is it stroke us as a rather dull place. We visited one afternoon: can't say if the area is more lively in the evening. From our experience, it was no big deal.

So much vibe and colour going on..Nice coffee and restaurants. Still very strong feel of East. Without seeing this side of Berlin, the picture will not be complete. But much rougher area.
