- Emma DMilton Keynes, United Kingdom448 contributionsBrilliant English speaking tourThe museum is so interesting, we booked the 90 minute English speaking tour, our guide was a young man studying at university, who spoke with clarity and passion. Nice cafe which served delicious sandwiches snd homemade cakes. We went to the Stasi Museum afterwards, it was a really interesting and informative day learning about the Stasi.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2023
- Bex BGloucestershire, United Kingdom33 contributionsour absolute HIGHLIGHT of our berlin tripWow wow wow!! Definitely book a guided tour, it was so insightful and informative. Our guide was so knowledgeable and conveyed everything so well you couldn’t not listen. It was fine to take photos but we chose to not take many out of respect. We took one of the standing cell (which was the one that really shocked us) and everything else will stay in our memories. The whole experience is well thought out and explained. We didn’t stay on for the permanent exhibition or a solo walk around, purely because by that point we were hungry (the tour is 2.5 hours without much sitting down) but wouldn’t have missed it for the world. I am already recommending this to all friends and family who have expressed interest in coming to Berlin. If you’re interested in the history and want to do something a bit more different, this would absolutely be the thing for you.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 July 2023
- Alesch W6 contributionsThe tour is a must! This one was an activity, which we „just did“ without big thoughts. We had the tour booked, and boy was it an insight. The guide really explained everything without any need of self-pity but more in a sarcastic an zynic way. With a ground tone of the GDR, where you had to agree with everything, but if you read through the lines, you understand exactly, what he meant. This can be difficult, if you‘re not used to that or not too fluent in German. But highly recommend the tour, where the whole Infrastructure, procedures and history is precisely explained.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 August 2023

The guided tour was very informative but the tour guide - Liam McArdle - was pretty rude and obnoxious

This was the only disappointing tour of a week filled with great ones. The tour guide -a Dutch historian, I don’t remember his name- was not a good tour guide. Rather than describing the conditions and letting people come to their own conclusions, he continually tried to shock people with torture descriptions. He even put forward without qualification that people suffered more in the Stasi prison than under the Nazis ( if you were Jewish, for instance, the perspective might be different). Rather than feeling the empathy and sympathy for the Stasi victims, we left feeling annoyed.
This tour may be great with a different guide, but this was our experience.

Booked last minute on our last day in Berlin. Happened to be one of the highlights of the trip. Our guide (sorry name didn’t stick…), was a Canadian Historian living in Berlin. Very captivating and kept the dialogue very serious. It is so hard to fathom what has happened as we get upset when our phone leaves our sides for 15 minutes. We need constant stimulation as a society. Here, they didn’t have any.
You may find it difficult to follow if grasp of German or a English is not great. The German tour has former inhabitants of the prison as a tour guide so imagine it’s very inciteful and personal.
Also, it’s a steal for the admission fee. Real value for money.

Visiting the Stasi prison was so interesting & informative. The guide managed to explain the cultural and political situations of the time, and how a minor infraction may have a person arrested and tried.
The place is well preserved and grim, especially on a windy grey day. But this added to the challenging conditions that the prisoners were forced to endure.
I’d really recommend a visit here, the prison was in use up until 1989 - not that long ago!
Ps- they only accept cash ( not cards).

This was a great place to visit based on the history that surrounds the location. However it was totally destroyed by the rudest tour guide on the planet. She basically verbally abused 2 of the group and then threatened to leave if they didn't go. Absolute shocker.
So little advise folks... AVOID the historian from Greece....
Real shame

An interesting place with an interesting history. There’s a number of buildings to visit, each with its own story and appear relatively as they were.
What really made it special was the exceptional tour guide Jasper. His expanse knowledge of the prison and anecdotes of people incarcerated really struck a core. He answered every question with additional stories and information. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide.
My friend I was with was visiting here a second time as he was so impressed on his first visit.

Need to book a guided tour in English. Our guide was fantastic, spoke excellent English and had so many interesting details to share of the history of the place. Fascinating and grim!

Zijn er dagelijks tours of rondleidingen beschikbaar en zo ja, moeten die gereserveerd worden?

We speak on English, unfortunately, but we heard there are former inmates who lead tours. Is it possible there are English language tours, by former inmates?
Are there English-speaking tours still available this month, from August 20? If so, could you give us dates/times?
Can we include the Stasi Museum with the prison?

I would think, that there would be tours in english, but I am not sure. But participate anyhow and ask some fellow tour-participates translating some of it and you’ll be fine, I think. I don’t know anything about the Stasi museum.

At the moment they only do guided tours because of reconstruction work. You don't have to book it in advance but there are only a few tours per day. don't miss out on it!

Is it easy to get on the right train to your your hotel from the airport.. x
Jamie B
Trafford, UK225 contributions
Hi Helen, it is very easy. Do your research and know what train to catch before you get there, for example, from Schoenefeld to Berlin you could find out its the RE7 and then find the platform for that train. Or you could ask someone. Once in Berlin, you can use the S or U-bahn to get nearer to your hotel and walk. My top tip is to use Google Maps. Put in the name of the airport and the hotel them boom! It tells you everything you need including the trains and platforms.
How do you book in advance for English guided tour?

We didn't book in advance last July. We were among 15 people and the tour was conducted in perfect English by a wonderful guide. It lasted about one hour. Not to be missed. Transportation to the museum is also very easy.

Bonjour! En regardant le commentaire, des visites guidées en français semblent possibles, mais je ne trouve pas d’informations à ce propos sur leur site. Quelqu’un a-t-il des informations supplémentaires à ce sujet ?

Is this the same place as Das Gefängnis in Berlin Köpenick (on go2know photo tours).
Also I’m interested in photography but wonder whether it would feel too voyeuristic. Any thoughts?

No, it is different jail. It was a former Soviet complex and later used by the DDR government as a jail for political prisoners. Most of them had no clue why they were there. You can take as much pictures as you like and do not forget to book a guided tour performed by local people, they are briljant.

Yes, you have to take a tram and then you have to walk 5 min. to the Forbidden Zone. Ask at the Info which stop you have to choose.
