The Nikolaiviertel was a lot smaller than I expected and although the square and the church were beautiful, I think this place is suffering from serious gentrification, there are more and more shops, fewer and fewer people. Anyway, I bet the views in summer are much better than the ones I saw in December, when it was cold, wet and... More

I was slightly disappointed with this area of Berlin as I had imagined it would be larger and have more of a medieval feel to it. It was admittedly picturesque but seemed to be a little too "manufactured". The area around the church is very pretty.

This is a quiet little area in the middle of a major city. It has a village type feel to it, we loved it. There are a few shops and restaurants. The church with the twin spires is beautiful. Sit for a while with a cuppa and soak in the area.

We left the hustle and bustle of Alexanderplatz and headed towards this lovely "old fashioned" area. Beside the twin spired church building were a few Christmas stalls, just gluhwein and sweets. The shops are really nice and there was a shop selling old fashioned wooden Christmas decorations. Also some great but popular places to eat here.

Lovely looking part of Berlin. Small area of cobbled streets with lots of cafes, bars & restaurants around. Can also visit some places on the river. Lovely old church to visit too.

Part of old East Berlin was renovated during the old regime including St Nicholas church which is the oldest in Berlin and now a museum. Also be sure to visit the Nussbaum pub - excellent food and drink for modest prices

Such a cute region! With its historical buildings and pretty houses. Everything is extremely clean and organized, as everything else in Germany. Great area to chill and relax.

We had walked along the river following our trip to the Reichstag. The area is old world and very reminiscent of Parts of Budapest and Prague. The area around St Nicholai Church is just charming with lots of little bars and eating places to enjoy the surroundings. The sight of a statue of St George slaying the dragon in view... More

These streets are so charming, so beautiful and they kind of remind me of old Prague somehow. This whole area offers a lot: cute little shops, cafes and bars, the river Spree is there too and of course the church, built in the 13th century. A day well spent!

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
Mitte
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
