Once city hall for West Berlin, this building's most striking feature is its 230-foot clock tower and its Liberty Bell replica, a gift from America in 1949.

Rathaus Schöneberg is one the many historic places to see in Berlin. For a tourist not much to see in particular, however here is the bell "Friedensglocke" located which you can hear mid day. It is close to a nice park and has a small restaurant: Ratskeller From the war you still can see many traces which have been covered... More

It was in this town hall that our beloved John F. Kennedy made his famous speech declaring "I am a Berliner" in 1963 through which he expressed his commitment to freedom of West Berlin. It is quite the amazing feeling to be there and imagine what that day in history was like.

This is a real local market; vendors cleaned out kitchens, closets, and garages. Most items are definitely lower quality and cost than the other markets I was visited. Clothes for women and children were everywhere. There might be a gem, but there was too much junk to look through, even though this market was fairly small. A few food and... More

Visited in January 2014. Good to see where JFK made he's speech but not much else there. Not to far to walk from the station.

Made the trip to the Schoneberg Rathaus from the centre of Berlin. Its not too far & easy to find once you get out of the station. The building itself is quite impressive, and there is a commemerative plaque on the front to JFK. As we visited only a short time after the 50th anniversary of his assassination, there were... More

While you're engrossed in the amazing history of Berlin, don't neglect to visit the historic Rathaus Schoeneberg and plaza. While you're refreshing yourself on--or just learning about--the Marshall Plan and life during wartime (and probably asking yourself, will it ever end?!), read through the text of the speech given by US President Kennedy here. There are also several architectural features... More

This is the most impressive of Berlin's TOWN HALLS was the hub of WEST BERLIN during the days of the Berlin Wall. Schoenberg Borough is one of the most attractive and colourful residential parts of centre of the City full of Galleries, super-restaurants and markets.

great photos of the Schoeneberg townhall; however, the other pictures show the so-called red townhall which is located in former East Berlin.

The building is quite good to look at, completed in 1914. You can still see the scars of many bullet holes. The Americans donated a bell, nicknamed the “freedom bell”, in 1950, which I understand was rang every day while the Berlin wall existed, which is just short of 30 years. When the wall went up, the West-Berliners were really... More

Staying in Schoneberg

Neighbourhood Profile
Schoneberg
In 1963, Schöneberg was the centre of the political west, inspiring John F. Kennedy to choose this area to famously announce, "Ich bin ein Berliner." Times may have changed, but modern-day Schöneberg still pays tribute to its historical legacies. Once the richest city outside of Berlin proper, the area's affluent past is still visible in ornate housing facades dating back to the Gründerzeit of the 19th century, while residents in fur coats walking their dogs or shopping in high-end KaDeWe continue the tradition with a modern flair. Schöneberg was also once the centre of the decadent and burlesque nightlife of the 1920s. It was here that Marlene Dietrich partied with Christopher Isherwood and the first gay bar in Germany was founded. Today, the gay community still revolves around Nollendorfplatz. The overground Ubahn station is even illuminated in rainbow colors, paying tribute to Schöneberg's progressive past.
