Great beautiful and imposing building around central Berlin, clean and historic if you realize that Karl Marx studied here!

Humboldt University is famous by many great minds that taught there, but also because Nazi's burned books at the square in front of it. The building itself is impressive, try to see it at night during the October Festival of Light, see attached photo.

Impressive looking building where Einstein once taught before the war. Many other very famous novel prize winners were here.

It’s sad that one man tinted and casted a shadow over German history. Some of the greatest minds in the world are German and these contributors to the world had their humble beginnings right here at Humboldt University. In fact, the Humboldt had as many as 29 Nobel Prize winners, with Einstein himself teaching a class here before the war.... More

We stopped here on our walking tour. The story of this university has a lot of historical significance - from Einstein being a lecturer, to the biggest number of Nobel prize winners, to the book burnings by the Nazis. It is now a lovely square to wander in and soak in the history.

There are a lot of things what you should probably know. Today there are some 35000 students. You can have a look inside where you can learn how many great personalities was here at the university - i.e. Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Bismark, Werner von Brauan, Max Planck, Albert Einstein - just to name some. The nazis burnt the book... More

As I walked by the Humboldt University, I couldn’t help but admire it. In fact, it was quite attractive. As a teacher, I am always curious about such establishments. I was able to find some information. It was in front of this university that they burned Jewish books in 1933. However, now-a-days students concentrate on their studies, 35000 students are... More

This buildings on this university are very beautiful. When we were there they were having a used book sale. Great to see since this is the Univeristy in Berlin where the Nazi Book Burning took place in 1933. In addition this is the university that Karl Marx attended. If we go back we will spend more time exploring this university.

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
