About
Situated in what was once the militarized “death strip” of the Berlin Wall (or Mauer) that divided East and West, Mauerpark is now a social, cultural, and artistic center of the city. Today’s Mauerpark is on land that ran between the two parallel walls separating East and West Berlin. With its observation towers, attack dogs, trip wires and armed guards primed to shoot anyone trying to escape to the West, it was known as the “death strip.” The park dates back to the early 1990s when local residents, noticing the rapid spread of self-seeded vegetation on the sandy strip of land, began planting trees and calling for the creation of a park. As a result, the city’s politicians included Mauerpark in the city’s bid to host the 2000 Olympics. Although Berlin’s bid for the Olympics was not successful, the plea to build Mauerpark was. In Mauerpark you can take a stroll, lie around, read, play on the swings, play boules and basketball, picnic in the birch grove, get involved in community gardening, go to the Rainbow Playground with the kids, watch musicians and performers in the amphitheatre, have a drink and a bite to eat in the outdoor cafes or hunt for bargains at the Sunday flea market.

We visited here on a very warm Sunday in September and wow, the vibes here were immaculate. So many beautiful stalls with a variety of clothes, jewellery, other intriguing items to browse!

The food / drinks stalls were a bit meh, nothing special and overpriced (by the German standards) but the musical and performance entertainment and the sense of community made up for the food and drinks. I really enjoyed my time here, I would definitely come back.

We attended recently on our trip to Berlin on a Sunday.

The park is great and has a nice vibe about it. There’s plenty of food/seats etc to relax.

Personally I didn’t enjoy the flea market, there were a lot of stalls that were overpriced and selling tat.

One thing to watch is the price of drinks especially bottled water, if you are visiting then bring your own as it was between 2 and 4 euros for a small bottle of water.

We didn’t stay for karaoke but it looks awesome as well.

the park is one of the most popular places for young residents of Berlin, especially from the fashionable district of Prenzlauer Berg, and attracts basketball players, jugglers, musicians, and many other types of people. It is a crowded leisure ground and a site of sustainable improvised nightlife, especially in the summer, and has also become notorious for Walpurgis Night riots in recent years. There are two stadiums next to the park, including Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark and Max-Schmeling-Halle, home to several of Berlin's local sports teams.

Fleamarket not worth visiting. Too much commercial stall holders, little varied offer.
The east european stall holders ask, ridiculously high prices for not so valuable things

We visited around 4pm, after visiting a nearby Vietnamese restaurant. It was a warm, lovely day, but it was not too busy at all. I found the area fascinating. There were interesting characters just “hanging out”. We walked in the park a ways, then climbed the slight incline to walk back to where we started out, along Bernauer str. Along the walk on the hill along the wall, we got to see several groups of graffiti artists doing their thing. Very cool, and very impressive. We had a short, but very nice visit to the Mauerpark. I would certainly return.

This area in Berlin is worth visiting. It's located in Berlin-Prenzlauerberg and can easily reached on foot or with the U-Bahn. The place itself is nothing special, just an average one, however, you definitely have to include it in your "Berlin to-do-list". It's a "must see" because you can find whatever your heart desires: a great flew market, food trucks (I can recommend the burritos) and an open mic every Sunday. Comfortably come to the end of the day, having a glass of wine or a beer in one of the plenty bars in the surrounding streets.

Not suitable for winter, felt like an existential disaster painted in dull shades of grey despair. Perhaps summer will be better.

You never know what life brings - a former death strip between two walls DDR built is now a relaxed and very friendly area.
I would recommend coming here to relax after visitng the Berlin Wall memorial museum (must see, read that review) which is just some 15 min down the Bernauer St.
There are many street performers along with street food, and you'll see some remnants of the original wall.
