Definitely a spot for the tourists and the must have Berlin photo. Not much else to see apart from the nearby gift shop for your must have souvenirs.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 24 December 2022
- MaryannF650Clarksville, Tennessee1,491 contributionsOriginal historic siteOnly the actual site of Checkpoint Charlie is original. The guard house on the American side was removed in 1990. A copy of the guard house and the sign that once marked the border crossing was reconstructed later on. Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War, representing the separation of East and West Berlin. Soviet and American tanks briefly faced each other at the location during the Berlin Crisis of 1961. According to available information, U. S. President John F. Kennedy visited Checkpoint Charlie on June 26, 1963 and looked from a platform onto the Berlin Wall and into East Berlin. The course of the former wall and border is now marked in the street with a line of cobblestones. The site is now one of Berlin’s primary tourist attractions. Don’t miss visiting this historical attraction.Visited November 2022Travelled with friendsWritten 30 December 2022
- NickSuffolk, United Kingdom30 contributionsScam at checkpoint CharlieI went here with my daughter and immediately saw a military truck with people posing for photos in old military jackets and hats. Next thing I know we were being jostled into it and clad in the gear whilst a guy took photos. After I thought I better tip him only to be charged 20 euros each. I felt scammed but be aware.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 January 2023
- DeliciousDelilahFerryside, United Kingdom242 contributionsDon't be a Charlie!Underwhelming garden shed on the site of the original Checkpoint Charlie with uniformed actors touting tourists for photos. Not impressive. If you want to see a genuine Checkpoint Charlie (this is the last of many editions) go to Allied Museum on Clayallee. Watch out for souvenir shops selling 'genuine' lumps of Berlin Wall, best avoided.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 January 2023
- MonteBurnsNew York City, New York982 contributionsI expected much more.Despite all the historical value it was really underwhelming to visit it. Like a glorified tollbooth surrounded by tourist traps. The highlight of my visit was going to McDonald’s and using the free wifi. Nothing like those Cold War movies that I watched. No thrill. No excitement. And it was freezing. I walked back to my hotel near the railway station and nearly froze to death.Visited January 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 January 2023
- Livia ChauarMilan, Italy154 contributionsIt is a tourist trap, but its nice anywayIt is a tourist trap, but its nice anyway. Basically it is a reconstruction of the old post that remained between the US and Soviet sides in Berlin. It is not the original one (removed a long time ago) but is nice to take pictures at. There are many, many overpriced shops all around this checkpoint, but I recommend not purchasing from here as prices are often much higher than in other tourist points.Visited February 2023Written 22 February 2023
- Tomas AChelmsford, United Kingdom19 contributionsCommercial pointNothing special. Good place for photo’s hunters which want have a photo front of the checkpoint on Instagram but that’s all. I found more special and interesting Berlin wall memorial where we spend much more time and have a chance to find much more interesting information about the life behind the wall.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 26 March 2023
- CWGermany124 contributionsOne of the Historical Points of BerlinAn open to public location, also a must see when in Berlin. It is part of the soul of Berlin's history. The interesting sheet boards that give visitors the information of Checkpoint Charlie creates a feel of a temporary facade. The boards are also "decorated" with graffiti, some voicing powerful messages while others are pure vandalism. Checkpoint Charlie itself stands in the middle of a fully functioning street and there could be a wait if you intend to take pictures at the Checkpoint Charlie stand itself, especially when there are many people. Because it is a public location, there is no entry fee nor does it require reservations. You can drop by at any time.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2023
- EricSingapore, Singapore110 contributionsA must-see when in Berlin.Nice experience and several historic places on the same street. Spent several hours exploring the sights and reading the history behind them. Definitely a must-see when in Berlin. There’s a Hard Rock Cafe there that sells exclusive Checkpoint Charlie souvenirs.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2023
- BigMerkGlasgow, United Kingdom2,274 contributionsIt’s a tourist magnet with little there - but you must do itIt’s world famous and very historic so you have to do it. However there isn’t much there (apart from lots of tourists). There is a small hut (the checkpoint), a sign and a big poster showing which side of the east/west divide you were on. It’s surrounded by McDonslds and other fast food franchises - so probably a quick visit.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 July 2023

Historically this is as poignant as you can get. Initially we thought the KFC sign was a callous attempt to cash in on the tourist attraction but it represents a bit of history when you see how old the signage is, you can ee it's not modern and has a connection to the American side of Berlin.
The hut is nothing more than a shack with sandbags and a bunker style barricade but not only was it poignant and educational (i for instance was unaware that the West of Berlin was split thrice between America, the UK and France) but we had some lads doing souvenir style newspaper printouts with yoru phot undermeath the headline of checkpoint charlie which added to the ambience. These were not free but a minimal donation required (less than 5 euros) and as this (like a lot of Berlin) is free to access this one is worth the awkward hunt for.

Its just a photo spot and a shop near by, probably should do as a few things in the area to take in while there, but just a quick snap and you are away! The shop was ok for usual gift stuff and nearby a few exhibits to take in.

The real core of Berlin. Some people are saying, that the checkpoint is fake, the only thing that’s been moved is the original booth, the one that is standing there now is a replica. The KFC logo right above the sign is kinda ruining the whole thing lol.

Very interesting place to see , a part of “modern “ history. Great information boards on the building of the Berlin Wall, the casualties and the way people escaped

The most touristic place in Berlin that symbolizes the past, but that has only been created because the tourists were asking about the checkpoint. This is not the exact location of the original checkpoint Charlie. It exists for you to take some photos.

This is an outdoor experience. It’s free of charge. A site has been maintained to tell the story of how Berlin was divided after WW2. Various individual stories of people shot who attempted to cross.

Free informative and enjoyable!
I really liked this spot! We stayed near this and we used the hop on hop off Big Bus tour—was PERFECT. We used bus to view, then Jumped off after the first round.
We arrived at the checkpoint at 9, read the wall, went into the gift shop to look around and then hopped on the FIRST BUS!

Found Checkpoint Charlie and not to much to see apart from the kisok in the middle of the road, But such a iconic landmark in history..
Plenty of tourist like me around the kisok and near by plenty of shops.
There is a museum as well about various escapes attemps and various escapes objects..
The U bahn station, Kochstr. is very close , In fact just a few meters away..

Can you pay on the day or is it best to pre book. If so what's the best website. Thank you in advanced

Yes, you can. No need to worry about that. On the other hand, the price is not worth the "experience". Anyway, it's your choice, Aidan. Good luck!

Hola amigo.

How much time is needed to view the museum? So excited to visit Berlin.

The checkpoint Charlie museum itself (paid entry one ) at least a couple of hours.
I'd say a good hour to look at the visual timeline in the area & same again for topography of terrors which Is just around the corner. Would highly recommend a tour with fat tire tours. They gave us a great overview of the city which then gave us ideas of what we wanted to see for the rest of the trip.

Hi I had my official passport stamped in Checkpoint Charlie last summer. And now Im applying as an au pair in Luxembourg where theyre asking for all the copies of all the pages on it. When I read all the comments in the internet.. now Im having a feeling that I made a super stupid decision. Is there anybody here who got questioned and refused by the government officials because of that souvenir stamp?

As far as I have heard it is not a legal stamp and could make entry to various countries difficult. They will at least query it

As far as credit cards or travel cards, do most places have an ATM that I can get cash from if I need to or should I bring cash with me?

I use pre-paid credit cards. Never had any problems. I take two cards (same company provider) If i lose one or it goes faulty. I can get the funds transfered to the other card.
Hi ! I would like to know if it's true that we can get a stamped passport at Checkpoint Charlie, please ?!? If yes, how much does it cost, please ? Thanks a lot.

Hi I was there with the wife in December and since then have been to Paris and just returned from Egypt and at no time was the Checkpoint's stamp commented on and my passport was checked at least 10 times by Egyptian security police and customs on a dive boat during the recent security clampdown ,so if you want one I can see no reason for it to invalidate your passport. You can negotiate the price in Germany depending on how many different stamps you want. We had six different on one page and they looked ok .If not just take a picture of yourselves by the Checkpoint small cabin for a souvenir
Hope this helps
