The museum exhibits in 2 buildings and on 6 floors Germanys most important collection of legal history. The highlight of this museum is its exploration into the unusual law enforcement techniques used by local rulers in medieval and early modern times, such as torture instruments, shame punishments or instruments to execute corporal punishments or death penalties. Numerous displays, original graphics by famous masters as Dürer, Grien and Rembrandt as well as original documents, seals and law books from the 13th - 19 th centuries show the development of law in past centuries. The homes and walls of Rothenburg show visitors the mileau of times gone by without telling much about the lawful circumstances of its residents. Arising questions? Answers can be found in the Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum.

Fantastic!

This is a fantastic museum. It is very well planned and put together. The history of law/crime/punishment and torture in medieval Germany is fascinating and is worthy of a visit!

This is an original with many tortuous devices and stories of a day gone by, or is it? Not a must see unless it is your thing.

This museum was quite interesting and had many artifacts of criminal justice (torture) from medieval times. About half had English translations as well. The museum is downtown and quite large. Costs about 8 Euro to enter. In addition to he artifacts were many engravings, prints, and documents but very few had English descriptions so that made it hard to understand.... More

Filled with floor after floor of authentic and informational examples of medieval crime, punishment, torture, judicial, and shame techniques used years ago. Nothing is glossed over, but rather, you are given an honest, direct explanation of how each tool was used, and the carnage inflicted upon the pool soul who had each used on him or her.

Horrifying to see what humans do to each other in the name of law and order. Strong stomach required.

Visiting the museum was a very disturbing but also an interesting experience for me. The arrangement of the museum could be better.

Ok, I'm kinda into this and wanted to gain a better insight into torture and how/why it started and evolved over the centuries. That part is definitely there with lots of reading, and I do mean lots of reading, on how torture came about and how bad it got. However, I would have liked to have seen more 3-dimensional displays,... More

My 8 and 10 year old girls lost interest VERY quickly. The younger did not like the idea of torture. The 12 year old found it interesting. Many steps.

For sensitive souls: be warned! This display can easily put you off the next meal. You see how errant bakers were punished, if the loves of bread were too small. I shows what happened to gossipping women, and the instruments of torture are not a pretty sight. For anybody else: this is an absolutely fascinating museum, which gives a lot... More

Had a free entrance pass from our hotel, so we went. If you are into torture and its history, I guess it's fine. Didn't do much for me though.
