Beautiful street to walk

We entered Rothenburg through the gate on Galgengasse and had a delightful introduction to the city as we strolled along past the picturesque buildings on our way to Marktplatz.

Galgengasse Translates to "Gallows Alley. Not sure how that ties into one of the towers but given medieval judicial practices, I can picture bodies hanging from the tower as a warning to villans. No bodies hanging now...just a pretty adjunct to the city walls

This is the street leading from one of the entrance into Rothenburg, especially if you came from the direction of the train station. The best view is afforded by climbing onto the tower and look down the street towards the town. Take a walk along the walls or go directly towards town - either way is nice.

An impressive entrance to a walled city. Worth stopping to observe its architecture and to climb up to walk the wall

Stop the car if you going by car. The stairs beside the entrance. You can go upstairs and the most part of the city. And you can walk to the wall as well.

From the towers along the wall is where you find the steps to the top of the wall where you cac walk along and imaging you are protecting the great town.

The north wall of Rothenburg connects Klingen Tower and gate (circa 1400) on the West with Galgen Tower and gate (14 century) on the East. Each tower provides steps up to the top of the wall. In medieval times, public executions took place just outside GalgenTor (Gallows Gate) in front of the tower. The original gallows lane was 1945 largely... More
