While in Rotherburg we visited all of the old city gates including Markusturm and Buttelhaus. Worth visiting for the photo opportunities.

They both have that peculiar Middle Ages flair, so many similar towers, yet all different. You can even see the storch nest from below.

During a walking tour of Rothenburg, my husband and I, along with a group of seniors, visited many of the landmarks and points of interest in the Old Town. Our local tour guide provided us with an extensive history of Markusturm and Buttelhaus.

"The Markusturm or the Mark's tower is probably the oldest remnants of this Bavarian Town, built around the 12th century when the first city wall was erected. It is quite close to the town hall. The Marksturm is a delightful covered gate entry, with a clock right under the tall spire steeple.

"Nearly every tourist will pass under this curved archway connecting two sides of the narrow street. Behind the Marksturm is a large stone tower -- the Buttelhaus or the Beadle House, which was a prison until the 18th century. Inside this structure today, the town stores its archival documents.

A travel tip: "Keep a lookout for street musicians paying traditional German folk music on Hafengasse." Don't miss an opportunity to photograph this beautiful site.

Markusturm is in the older part of the old town, so it is not part of the latest part of the defence wall. Take a look up and you might spot mr / mrs Stork living there at top.

This is a very scenic part of the town. It is also a site where it is almost impossible to take an unobstructed photograph as fellow tourists are posing in front of the gate. Despite that, it is worth seeing.

Markusturm is one of the wonderful towers located in the old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a fantastic medieval city in Franconia, a region of the south part of Germany. In fact, if you walk in the street, which goes to the tower, you can see very nice views of the town: it is one of the typical photos in the city, in which there are the turm and some buildings with a very beautiful facade. Great.

The hotel Tilman is located near tis place. Nice view of the medieval houses and tower. The flowers on the house window boxes give a special colour to the streets.
