I hate to rate this beautiful well preserved castle poorly. But…if you do not steak/understand German, visiting it is pretty much a waste of time. The castle itself (other than the courtyard and a gift shop) cannot be entered without a tour. The tours are conducted every 30 minutes (at least in late April they are) but only in German. Those who don’t understand German are given a flyer with about three sentences worth of information at each stop on the tour. Thus, for about 45 minutes, we were tagging along a group of Germans, who were enjoying an informative tour, while we were just standing in the corner waiting to move forward. I honestly don’t understand why, being such an attraction in the middle of the Romantic Road, they could not provide at least an audio guide for non-German speakers.

When I lived in Bavaria castle Harburg was one of my most favourite places to go. I never had enough of views to the castle over the river and views to the town and the river from the castle.
We used to come at weekend afternoon and always found enough places to park our car in the town. Walking uphill is a bit of exercise but knowing what is waiting for is on the top we always enjoyed.
Big part of the castle is freely accessibly, part is paid but not expansive.
I can only recommend this lovely romantic place and hope I will come back one day.

This is one of the oldest castles in Bavaria, if not Germany. You don't see much without the tour, so definitely do that. Our tour guide, Susana, was awesone and made sure to give the tour in English and German, which was very kind. It is a beutiful old castle and well worth a visit on the Romatic Road.

Not sure what one expect when you’re going to tour a castle; however, our guide was informative and the ground were terrific. Enjoyed walking through the castle and all the various keeps. Was a rainy day and that was probably the worst of anything. The castle itself is beautiful and historic

So, my wife and I had our dog with us, and so we couldn’t both do the interior tour of the Castle. One of us might have done the tour anyway had it been offered in English, but alas that wasn’t possible either. So we wandered around the grounds for 10-15 minutes, took a few photos and then left, learning nothing more about the castle than what we read on Wikipedia before we got there.
It was a pretty nominal 3 euro each to view the castle grounds, so I didn’t feel ripped off, but some minimal level of effort (like some English info signs, or even handing out an information sheet giving some detail about the castle) may have greatly enhanced my e perience, to the point where I could recommend visiting this attraction to other English speaking tourists.

This is probably not the most beautiful castle I have seen, but definitely worth a visit whilst you are on the Romantic route. Parking is relatively close by and it is just a short walk to enter. One definitely has to do the guided tour. This is where you will find out most of the information relating to the castle and the history. There is a viewpoint, which is quite lovely as well. There is a restaurant on site, but that can be skipped.

While driving up and into town, you'll be rewarded by gorgeous views of the castle. It's vast walls and tall towers give it a proper medical feel, both from the outside and once inside the castle walls.

As we'd seen more castles in our trip (see other reviews) we didn't want to do a full tour. Therefore we just both tickets to stroll through the garden. There is no possibility to see the inside of the castle without a guide.

Our ticket to just get within the outer walls allowed us to look at the gardens, enjoy the views from the wall on one side of the castle and we got to read plaques which tell visitors of the building's purpose and history. Also, the church was open for visits. To our surprise, there was also a little tin figure exposition. It was fun to look at the little soldiers in display and to find different countries and regiments from various era's.

All in all, we looked around for maybe 30 minutes. Considering we only paid around 3 euros each, that was fine. I'm not sure about the length and the price of a tour, but it looked fun as they passed by us over the castle walls above the port cullis.

It is a gorgeous castle but I don't regret not getting a guide as we'd already seen so many fortifications. It is smart to do some research in to the castles along your route and to pick a few to visit properly and some others for just a short stop.

The castle is beautiful, and it is really well preserved. The inside tour takes around 45 minutes, and it is really interesting to see how people lived in Middle Ages. Hardly recommended.

Visited Harburg Castle as part of the “Romantic Road” tour. We got here very early in the morning and it was very foggy on that day. It was a spectacular viewing to see this perfectly maintained medieval castle slowly appear, from the fog, as you are waking up the hill. We paid extra for the guided tour and was able to go up the castle walls and various chambers/rooms. The guide, which was in perfect English, was very insightful and friendly. Lasts about 30-45 minutes. Real gem in Bavaria, not to be missed.
