This was one of our stops in the two weeks trek through Babaria and Tirol and I am happy it was in the planner. It is the home of Hones Schols, another reason this small town is very famous and looked for.
It is a charming typical Bavarian town with plenty of hotels, nice small shops and restaurants, friendly laid-back people.
Our hotel was right on the main street, a very old pretty building. You must stop and even spend a full day in this fascinating town if you are going to see the Marienbrücke & Neuschwanstein Castle in the area.

One of our last stops on our Romantic Road Roadtrip and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a great base if you’re planning to do the castles. The old town is very cute and charming although extremely pricey as to be expected from a ski town. It reminded me a lot of telluride, Colorado in the U.S.A. I bought some souvenirs here. We also had lunch a few times and got warmed up in some cafes. Definitely worth stopping to wander around the old town a bit.

Enchanting little town. People are very friendly. Shops, restaurants, a museum and castle. Easy to visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castle. Also worth a few hours at Kristall Therme salt pools. Book ahead if you want a massage.

Bavaria, along the "Romantic Strasse", on a charming hilly location surrounded by a river ... what else should I add?
The town of Füssen is really charming and very nice, the old town is a little jewel, castle, monastery with annexed museum and, now and then, special exibitions (the just finished "Bayern-Italien" was really worth visiting), besides, within the castle hof, modern art exposed open-air ... Add to all this, the smerald-coloured river, with icy waters just coming down from the Alps
Wow ...
As if not enough, in a 5 kilometers range you can visit the breath-taking Neuschwanstein castle and the not-less-interesting Hohenschwangau castle.
Are you still there reading or are you rushing to visit the place?
In my opinion the best period for a visit is either in winter, with the snow covering all these places, or during mid-Autumn, when all the trees are changing from green to yellow/red/brown ... an additional added value ...

To most, Fussen is merely the gateway town you go through to see Ludwig's famous castle, Neuschwanstein. But if you take the time to walk around, you will see that it has a lot more to offer. I myself have been to Germany six times and I always make it a point to stay here for a few days. Over the years I have seen the crowds grow to alarming proportions in the afternoon but I find time to enjoy the town in the early morning hours and evening. The first thing you will notice when you walk down the main pedestrian street (near Hotel Sonne) is that the buildings are beautiful. They are almost all historic dating back hundreds of years and are kept in great condition. Brightly colored and close together, they make for amazing pictures. The town also boasts much of its medieval feel with a castle, city walls and a Cloister. Keep in mind that this town is 700 years old! As you walk down the main drag past numerous shops and restaurants, you will eventually come to a large clock tower. Turning right here you will be led to the entrance of the "Hohes Schloss." Take a few minutes to visit the castle and snap some great shots of the town. When you return to the main drag, turn left. Immediately you will notice the entrance to the old cloister (now admin offices). Take a walk inside the courtyard for some more wonderful photos. Once back onto the street, turn left again and you will come to a brightly colored church (Spital). Take a moment to walk inside and see the elaborate interior decorations. When you are done, continue down the street and cross the Lech River. On the other side you will get a great view of the Cloister and Castle. Other sights worth noting in the town are the Lech falls (once you cross that bridge, head up the road a little ways and you will find it) and the old city walls.

I would be remiss if I did not mention my favorite food found only in three cities in Germany, one of them being Fussen. That food of course is the Schneeballen. A large round ball of fried strudel covered in all sorts of toppings and definitely not for the health conscious. The shop is located on the main drag I was just describing above. If you are staying overnight and need a place to eat may I suggest the Olivenbauer, A nice restaurant that serves good food at reasonable prices and makes a NY worthy pizza.

There is so much to love about Fussen. Great restaurants, lots of cool little shops and a medieval town to explore. When you mix in its proximity to a train station, the royal castles and other regional castles like those in Zell (Eisenburg and Freyburg) and Reutte (Ehrenburg), you can easily justify spending a week here.

After a conference in Munich, I was planning to visit the world famous Neuschwanstein Castle. Altstadt von Fuessen was just a stop on the way......

Stepped off the train, I was attracted by the beautiful scenery.
Walking in the town, you can see many nice houses, beautiful churches, elegant hotels and quaint restaurants. Beside the beautiful street view, there are wonderful natural scenes – mountains, rivers and lakes. Peoples are kind and friendly. I also visited the Füssen Heritage Museum and the landmark of Fussen, the castle 'Hohes Schloss' (High Castle). The High Castle is a century old majestic castle, with the National Gallery of High Castle in it.

I stayed here for three days, spending all of my vacation in this old town, experiencing an enjoyable and memorable tour of Bavaria. …….Finally, I did not go to the Neuschwanstein castle.

Fuessen is a lovely little town about a 2 hour train ride from Munich. it is the final destiantion at the end of the Romantic road amn the Roman Via Claudia is said to have passed right through where the old town's main street was built.
Many visitors bypass it or take the bus directly from the train station to the two major attractions of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwantstein of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Fuessen is worth visiting in its own right. The old town centre and pedestrian area is really pretty and well kept with interesting buildings, fountains, restaurants and cafes. There is always some kind of festival in the offing where the good local beer flows and there is great entertainment and humour all around. It is very traditional and local Bavarian costumes are a common sight. The Hohes Schloss, Rathaus Museum, Fransiscan Monastery and St Mang's church are well worth visiting, as well as many other churches in the town. Don't miss the Todestanz (Dance of Death) in the Rathaus museum and the illusionist painting on the outside of the Hohes Schloss.
There are a wealth of restaurants and cafes for refreshenments. Do try the the Eis Cafe for scrumptious ice cream concoctions with good service.
There are pleasant walks along the river. It is worth venturing further afield along the path to Bad Falenbach to view the Lech waterfall. Not far from where the Lech flows into the man made Lake Forgansee there are excursions by boat to many parts of this scenic water. Swimming is also possible in the lakes. Cycling on the numerous paths is a preferred option for many as well as hiking. Although Alpsee is said to be the most beautiful, my personal favourite is the little Schwansee lake. It is well worth spending a few days in the lovely town adn the surrounding area.

Füssen is worth visiting in its own right. The city has scenic places where you can have a bit of stroll around the pedestrian area (downtown).

Last June we visited the fairy tale castles Neuschwanstein and Hogenshwangau. We arrived Munich in the morning, bought the Bavarian pass at the airport (28€ for 2) and took the train and stayed in Füssen.

PROS
Füssen is a small lovely town a few miles from the castles. The old town center and pedestrian area are really pretty with interesting buildings, water fountains, and restaurants. The Hohes Schloss, Rathaus, Museum, Franciscan Monastery and St. Magnus’s Basilica are worth visiting. There are pleasant walks along the Lech river venturing further to view the waterfall or take a boat excursions in Lake Forgansee.
Staying in Füssen allows you to get to the castles early in the morning before tour buses arrive and allows you to mingle with the locals. Try the apple strudel in one of the cafes in the pedestrian area. Hotels and restaurants near the castles are a lot more expensive and full of tourists. If you travel also to learn about the local culture, as Rick Steves said “the more you spend, the bigger the wall you build” between yourself and the locals.

CONS
If you have only one day available, then make it a day trip from Munich but make reservations for the castles via Internet to avoid long lines and take an early train. It will be a long day. If you stay at least one night you will spend on a hotel but it will be worth it. You could even enjoy the hot springs at the Königliche Kristall Therme in Schwangau

THE CASTLES
King Ludwig’s beautiful Neuschwanstein castle (it inspired Walt Disney to build the Cinderella Castle) has picturesque surroundings, is high on a steep hill overlooking a green valley and the distant Austrian Alps behind. Every year 1.4 million people visit Neuschwanstein. The views of the castle from the bridge Marienbrücke and the waterfall were stunning. Don’t miss it. Take the bus (1.8€ uphill) from the village to the top, then hike (15 min) to Marienbrücke to view the entire castle before walking down to the castle (bit steep but has concrete walk way). There is a cafeteria near the gift shop. Do visit the Bayern Museum! (Museum der Bayerischen Könige) to learn about King Ludwig II’s family. If possible attend a concert at night when the castle is most magical.

The Romantic Road bus (Frankfurt-Fuessen) goes through the Bavarian countryside and takes you to beautiful medieval towns, castles, churches and villages. We took this bus to Rothenburg ob der tauber at the train station which is a regional bus hub.
