The Germanisches Nationalmuseum is housed in a ultra-modern structure hooked onto a Medieval cloister. Due to its size, we devoted about five hours over two days to it. The 16th Century galleries included some of Albrecht Dürer’s most famous paintings, with the portraits especially striking. Much of the rest of the museum veered toward the “region’s attic” approach, assemblages of artifacts of more historic than aesthetic interest. The two temporary exhibits were well arranged and explicated, with texts in both German and English. One featured highlights from the museum’s Middle Ages collection, which was being relocated. The other focused on the art of Hans Hoffmann, a contemporary of Dürer’s. In addition to paintings of religious subjects, Hoffmann did some fine depictions of animals.

Truly excellent museum, despite the hoops required. To get in (as of December 2021) you not only have to be fully COVID vaccinated, but you also have to have a negative PCR test taken less than 24 hours before your visit. That does rather bump up the price if you have to pay for a test you don't have (or need elsewhere) but it probably is worth it if you already have your test as the museum itself is only E8 and you could be lost in the myriad of exhibits for the whole day.
It is a bit of an odd layout and you will find yourself retracing your steps repeatedly and going up and down stairs/elevators in various different buildings, but it's all worth it. Such a wide range of artistic memorabilia from china to wooden crafts to clothing to musical instruments to Roman remains to military memorabilia to religious artefacts. The buildings and architecture are as interesting as the exhibits. A great day for exploring inside in bad weather or any weather, but the COVID rules are tricky for sure.

Dear Jarko2015,
thank you for your very kind and detailed review. We are pleased that you enjoyed our diverse collections. The crooked architecture is based on the history of our museum, which has grown over the centuries.
The Corona rules have changed slightly in the meantime, so that people who have been vaccinated three times are allowed to come without a daily test. We hope to be able to open again soon without any restrictions. We hope you will visit our museum again.
Best wishes Germanisches Nationalmuseum

This was my second visit to this amazing museum.
Instead of exploring new areas I'd missed before, I decided to return to the religious art/artifacts sections. These made the strongest impressions on me, so I had to see them again.
Also enjoyed a coffee and pastry in the quiet cafe.
Now I must plan a third visit when I return for the third time!

This is a superb museum - one of the best we've visited - dedicated to the cultural history of the German people. There are too many exhibits to take in in a single visit, so one must pick and choose. We loved the musical instruments and the way the the museum incorporates the old monastery around which it is built. The special exhibitions during our visit were highly instructive.

Fantastic museum. The diverse amount of antiquities within the museum make this a must. Highly recommend getting the audio tour to learn the intimate details of the pieces. Plus, how the museum was built around a monastery. It is Germany’s Smithsonian.

It is a very good museum, however I wouldn't put it on the top attractions you must visit, above all if your time in Nuremberg is limited. If you have more time or live nearby, then it is good. The museum is huge and has a big selection of everything, so have time and prepare to explore!

The museum is vast and has so many items. We looked at the music exhibition, the middle ages, science and several other areas. All was well presented with lots of information in German and English. Highly recommended!

Lovely museum with plenty to see.
The entrance fee was only €8. Once a ticket is purchased, you are able to freely leave the museum and return as you wish, until closing time.
It was very easy to find and is a short walk from the main shopping area in Nürnberg.
Unfortunately, the guided tour is only offered in German so visitors who do not speak the language will have to guide themselves.
You do receive a map of the museum once you purchase a ticket. Personally, I found it quite confusing to follow but they were staff members scattered around the museum who were on hand to help with directions.

We are renting a car and coming from the airport. Is parking easily available?
This is from the Museum's English website:
Does the Museum have a parking lot?
There are city parking garages in the immediate vicinity of the Museum, e.g. below the Kornmarkt. The Museum does not have its own parking spaces.
I cannot perfectly answer your question about parking being "easily available", because I do not know how you mean "easily", but you shouldn't have any trouble finding a place to park close to the museum.
