- BradHong Kong, China1,78,386 contributionsFunctional central station in MunichArrived and departed from Munich Central Station (München Hauptbahnhof) during a recent trip to Austria and Germany. There was a bit of construction taking place and fairly large crowds, many making way out to the Oktoberfest celebrations. Because of construction taking place, the lockers available seem to have been greatly reduced at the moment. This is something to be aware of for those aiming to use such services. Platforms are organised well, signage makes it easy to find departure location and there are loads of destination departures so plenty of travel options from Munich Hbf.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023
- Traveler OWashington DC, District of Columbia1,216 contributionsBig, central stationMunich's Hbf - primary train station. It's pretty easy to take the S-Bahn or U-Bahn from here to see the city or head elsewhere in the area. Just be mindful of your belongings as there are still panhandlers and pickpockets throughout the station looking for easy targets. It's a construction zone for now though on the surface level, so plan accordingly to have to backtrack and take poorly labeled routes to get around at times.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2024
- ERFSU82Wellington, Florida2,001 contributionsConvenient hub with lots of food optionsIt’s hard to visit Munich without at least passing through the main train station. A central hub for the trains and local tram system, the station is also filled with restaurants, cafés, kiosks, and shops. There are lots of good options for grabbing a quick snack or meal on the go.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 June 2024

The person working at the toilet in the central bus station was extremely unpleasant tonight. First he Was screaming at me because I was lining up for the men’s toilet (sorry it was the middle of the night and was traveling since 10h on a flixbus and it looked like the ladies toilet was closed by a chain). Then he was insulting me for taking too long to take 50 cents out of my pocket (I was the only woman in the line so no pressure needed). he looked pretty drunk or high and meeting him like that serious scared me. I hope he loses his job as he was clearly not doing it (train spotting style toilet)

Arrived in Munich central station on an OBB train from Vienna. We had a 10 minute walk from the platform to the main concourse, through crowds, not helped by building and other works taking place. The station is dirty and very disorganised. The signage is poor. Indeed the whole area around the station is run down and feels unsafe, though it is where most hotels are based, including the 5 star Sofitel. Transferring to local public transport is easy, but hard to find ticket machines. My advice is only travel to Munich if you have no choice, this city is unfriendly and dirty. Avoid

Probably the most desolate train station in Germany - travel a loon German trains but had been a few years to come back to Munich central station. It had completely changed with most shops and eatery gone, seating / waiting area decimated to a total of maybe 20 seats above the main hall ( in the main hall -> cold, noisy) could be undergoing renovation but no sign indicated so.

It is a big place and that's why it is rather confusing for me as a first time traveller to munich.
The station have 3 parts, the regional/international trains, the S-bahn in the middle and then the U-bahn.
One have to be bold to ask people when one is lost and that is when tourist like me can encounter beautiful Germans who are very willing to help tourist navigate their country. Well done Germans, you are awesome.

A cheer to the main station of the Bavarian capital! According to Söder, Germany would be a better country if it were like Bavaria. You should avoid spending the night on the Bhf because you have to/want to take one of the first trains. Nix is open, guests are expected to spend time in the cold drafty central station. Hardly any seating, dirty toilets. Three quarters of an hour before departure, the empty ICE pulls in, - and remains locked! Passengers have to wait on the platform until you open the doors mercifully 10 minutes before departure! Another cheer on DB and inhumanity. Poor Bavaria, poor Germany.

It's the worst railway station I've ever seen! The building is dirty and the lockers are a mess. Moreover, the lockers are coin-operated, which is quite inconvenient.
It was annoying when our locker didn't read the 2-euro coin I had inserted and I ended up paying eight euros instead of six.

We came from Switzerland from a trip there, to change trains, and we had a little bit of time to explore the city. Got off the train and the first thing we see is a broken bench. We couldn't find the proper exit, so we came out to a smelly, dirty corridor. We went to a KFC nearby (that was very bad compared to Hungary of all places), and got back. The underground part of the station smelled and was dirty too. The toilets cost €1 and they weren't as bad, but still were a little bit dirty. Compared to Switzerland and Austria, it was a bad experience. I hope it will be better when they finish the renovations, but to someone that has time to explore the city for a little bit, it's very bad.

It's unsettling because of construction to make it new.
I think it will be very beautiful in a few years.
There are many shops in the basement, but there are also many exits, so it's difficult for people with bad sense of direction.
People heading to the airport on the S-Bahn tend to depart from platform 11. It's the one with Starbucks.
My trip to Vienna was from platform 5, but I had to walk through platform 11 and it was quite a distance.
I also took the EC during the summer season, and it was full, so I recommend making an online reservation during this season if your plans are confirmed.
There are single seats in first class, and I reserved a quiet seat, so it was comfortable.
However, many people sat in other people's seats despite the signs, which I think is a cultural difference, but it made me feel uneasy.

When I visited on a weekday evening, there were many people at the station. There were many people lining up at several bakeries inside the station.
The east side of the station was under construction, so in order to exit the station, the only way to exit the station was from the north side, which was the exit from the south side, and I couldn't exit from the east side, which was a bit of a hassle.

On what street and level is the main entrance? We will be staying nearby and will have to catch a 6:30 am train.

I have a train change in Munich next month. The Railjet train that I will be travelling in will arrive at platform no 5 and my next ICE train travel will start at platform no 15. I have 10 minutes in between. How to reach from platform 5 to 15 and how much time will I need approximately?
Written 18 April 2023
I think not more than 5 minutes, but you have to check signs very carefully

During the current rebuilding works at the station are there still ample left luggage lockers available? I need to use several large lockers on Saturday lunchtime 4th September and need to be sure that there will be some. When I last visited 2 years ago they had been re sited to a dingy, dirty not well lit tunnel and the number had been greatly reduced!

is there any place to store luggage at train station for a few hours while attending Oktoberfest? And how safe?
Written 25 February 2020

We are only in Munich for one night, stopping at the central station and hope to leave our luggage for a few hours and have dinner and shop. What area should we go to in Munich for a couple hours, back to HBF and then on to Munich airport hotel?
Written 28 September 2019
I would take the train to Marienplatz. Lots to see, shop and places to eat!

How far is S1 platform 1 to platform 12. I've only 10 min to change trains in munich central station
Written 25 September 2019
S 1 is the under ground so you have to go up escalator then you up to main station . Unfortunately for you platform 12 is way on the other side of the station . `So depending on crowds time of day 10 minutes is doable > The main thing for you is how quick you get from underground to main floor .

Where can one park close to terminal long enough to drop passengers and luggage before returning rental car? Like at an airport terminal. Is it only parking with a fee?
Written 8 August 2019
My husband dropped me off at Arnulfstrasse several times. Tour buses also load and unload passages there. A lot of taxi also wait for customer there.
