This monument is dedicated to two interesting pieces of Bavarian history. The first is Saint Mary, whose golden statue tops the column. She is traditionally regarded as the protector of Bavaria. Marienplatz itself is named after her. The second aspect of history commemorated by the column is the end of the Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years' War. Millions of people died in this struggle over imperial rule and religion. Hopefully taking a moment to remember can help us to avoid such conflicts in the future.

Quite an interesting column in the middle of Marienplatz. I was blown away from the New Town Hall so this was a bit underwhelming comparatively. It was also a bit hard to appreciate it with stalls being deconstructed all around us since they were packing up the Christmas market.
The golden statue on top was beautiful as were the angels on the base. I imagine it would be more central in a flat plaza with no stalls all around.

The Mariensaule is located in Munich in Marienplatz ... it is a column erect in 1638 to celebrate the departure of the Swedish occupation at the end of the 30 Years war.
The golden statue of the Virgin Mary - the Protector of Bavaria - was originally in the Frauenkirche but after 1638 it has taken its place on top of the column - hence the name Mariensaule.
So for those of you who are in the Munich visiting the Marienplatz this is a interesting landmark where you can take a few pics.
Enjoy Munich, enjoy Marienplatz and enjoy Mariensaule.

Mariensaeule is an example of a religious monuments depicting Virgin Mary on the top of a column. While the purpose of the Holy Trinity columns is usually to celebrate the Christian faith, this was built in in 1638 to mark the end of Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years' War.

The golden statue depicts Mary standing on a crescent moon as the Queen of Heaven. In her left arm she holds the infant Jesus and on the right, she holds a sceptre raised and pointing to heaven. The column is low enough that you can get a really good view of the statue.

A nice monument that makes for a good foreground for taking photographs in the square. Better in sunshine, but, still nice to see.

Marienplatz was named after the 11 meters Marian column dominating
the middle of the square. The column is dedicated to St. Mary as the patron saint of Bavaria.
The column is topped by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon as the Queen of Heaven. Equipped with scepter and crown, the blessing Christ child with an orb on her arm, the column symbolizes faith and hope.
At each corner of the column's pedestal is a statue of a putto. The four putti are each depicted fighting a different beast, symbolizing the city's overcoming of adversities: war represented by the lion, pestilence by the cockatrice, hunger or famine by the dragon and heresy by the snake.

The Mariensäule (Column of the Virgin) is found in the centre of the Marienplatz in the Old Town of Munich. This is an impressive historic monument erected at this sight in 1638 to commemorate the end of the Thirty Year War.

What you will find is a column topped with the gilded figure of the Virgin Mary who is honoured as the patron saint of Bavaria. She is seen crowned with newborn child in her left arm while holding up what appears to be a scepter on her right hand.

The column and plinth include four bronze statues of putti which represent the overcoming of hunger, war, plague and heresy. Here you see four cherubs battling and defeating four creatures.

The Mariensäule is a beautiful monument, one well worth spending a few minutes to enjoy while at Marienplatz.

This golden statue of The Virgin Mary rises in the center of Marienplatz and is a eye catcher. Since there is so much to see in the square, this statue marks a meeting point for a lot of groups. The statue makes you feel watched and protected.
