Close to both Marienplatz and the Altstadt and housing 3 important sights, including the Residenz Palace, this area is a great place to take a stroll. Plenty of places around to eat and drink. At night the buildings are illuminated and take on a different look. Watch out for cyclists and trams if you are taking photos.

Very nice and large square very next to the city centre - Marienplatz. If you are on foot you will need some 5 minutes walk for about 350 meters from Marienplatz. There are very interesting buildings and Munich landmarks like Bavarian State Opera or Residenz complex. At last, but not least, from here you can start shopping along the Maximilianstraße.

The large square in front of the National Theater is dedicated to King Maximilian Joseph and has a statue of the King at its center. The King is portrayed in a seated position on a rectangular base. The side of the base are carved with beautiful reliefs and a lion sits at each corner of the base.

Although in many ways, Marienplatz is the most popular Square in Munich with the Glockenspiel as a great attraction, We seemed to be visiting or crossing Max Joseph Platz more regularly. Less crowded, but with the Opera House, Theatre and Residence building all surrounding the Square, probably a more important site. With day and evening visits we were able to sample the atmosphere at different stages and it is well worth a visit.

This impressive square is located between Odeonsplatz & Marienplatch (Both reviewed earlier) with some grand buildings. This square is dedicated to Maximillian 1, the first king of Bavaria, whose bronze statue stands in the middle of the semi-pedestrianised square. The king is shown sitting in Roman garb on a chair placed on a high pedestal which has numerous decorated reliefs.Right below the king are the four panels depicting science, religion & arts,Agriculture & justice & the Bavarian constitution of 1818.At the bottom are 4 lions seated in each corner.

The other major buildings are the National Theater,Residenz & Palais de oper, a multi-functional complex.Residenz palace, is home to the treasures of the Royalty kept at Schatzkammer. There is also the Njiebelungensale decorated with large paintings on the ceilings & walls. The National Theater has both impressive exteriors & interiors with a seating capacity of 2000 people.

The square is surrounded by very important buildings, like the Bavarian National Theater (Opera house), the Rezidence. There are also some shops and two typical Bavarian restaurants.
