The first time I did I wondered why I kept seeing guys in wetsuits riding bicycles with a surfboard under their arm... Then I came across the 'Eisbachwelle' and everything fell into place. This year round surfing wave on the River Eisbach at the Southern end of the English Garden is a popular spot with surfers of all ages and genders. I love to stop on the road bridge (on Prinzregentenstrasse) and watch the surfers take turns to ride the wave. It all seems very sociable, safe and courteous and it sure is fun to watch. If I were a surfer I'd sure like to have a go. A very unique sight that is well worth seeking out to experience when in Munich for a few days.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 January 2024
- Berke AyrancıoğluGraz, Austria673 contributionsA very interesting spot, people surf in the middle of the see, no matter how cold it is.A very interesting location. The stream of the river makes a nice spot for surfers and people use this advantage. It was winter when I visited, we were walking with our jackets but some locals were surfing anyways. I guess it is possible to swim in summer.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 January 2024
- ERFSU82Wellington, Florida2,001 contributionsSurfing in Munich. We stopped here to watch the surfers for a few minutes during a stroll through the English Garden. It was fun to watch. As we approached the area, it was unusual to see some people wearing wetsuits and carrying surfboards through the streets of Munich, but this unique location to watch surfing is part of its appeal. The surrounding park is also a nice place for a relaxing stroll.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 July 2024

We were there on a hot summer Saturday afternoon. There were a couple dozen surfers at that time, and a crowd gathered to watch. It was easy to find a spot to sit next to the water and have a good view. The surfers line up and take turns. Some were performing trick moves on the waves. Definitely check this out!

Although this attraction is hyped in every Munich tourist guide, it’s so much fun to watch the Eisbach surfers. They surf in summer, they surf in winter, they’re elegant and amazing to watch. My son decided one day 2 years ago that he would surf on the Eisbach, and now he’s a regular, entertaining both locals and tourists alike.

I first discovered the Eisbachwelle (Eisbach Wave) River Surfing by accident when I was in Munich in May 2022. Back in Munich again this May (2023) I made a point of going to the Eisbach Wave to see the surfers in action. I went here several days, to walk in the English Garden Park, both early in the morning and late at night and there were always people surfing. At night they were surfing by the light of spotlights positioned on the bridge above the wave. It really is fun to watch and so very cool seeing people surfing on a river in the centre of a big city like Munich in land locked Germany. This has been a major spot for surfers for over 40 years and always attracts a crowd... A very unique sight worth taking a look at.

Best free entertainment for as long as you want to watch. We were there in sub zero temperatures but still 6 or so boarders in wet suits trying their skills to cross the waves. Just brilliant to watch, if you are passing for 5 minutes and stay around for ages to see their skills. If you are nearby- its at the top of the English Garden, its worth a visit and assume there are surfers on most days as the wave conditions look pretty permanent!

After a long walk in the English Garten, this spectacular attraction is fun. On the south part of this enormous park, young people in wet suits and surfing board at the ready, impatiently stand in line to surf on the artificial waves and risk their lifes. This is a must see!

It was really fun to watch surfers right in the middle of the city. It's on the edge of famous English Garden. It's also valled Ice River. The waves are very rough here and water temprature is 2*. All the surfers wait for their turn to jump in the water.

WOW - this was a thing to witness on a chilly November day. Some VERY dedicated surfers taking on the wave. Hoods, thick wetsuits, and some v pink faces. Loved watching these guys riding the wave.

Have been to World Surfing champs in Margaret River, WA and Bells Beach Victoria. They are fantastic, but this is more local unique - where else can you watch people surf in a river in a land locked city??? Locals clearly have their own culture, community and vibe. I cannot think of anywhere else in the world where it would be snowing in the morning and 1km awqay you could watch people surf in the afternoon.

The Eisbach wave in Munich is a very beautiful place in the English Garden. You can watch the surfers there as they fight against the waves. It's simply fascinating how beautiful it is there and how many people watch the surfers. The funny thing is that on hot summer days the surfers can really get you wet.
I really like spending time there because you can sit down and just watch. It's just a great and exciting place that I would recommend to anyone who goes to Munich. And the great thing is that you can visit this place more than once because it's a highlight every time.

Actually not a particularly spectacular place, a wave in the Isar in the city center of Munich. What makes this place special are the surfers who can give it their best all day long. You can spend some time here watching the surfers face the wave and after a few seconds are carried away by the water.

Hello, is there a place to rent boards and wetsuit? Traveling there with an intermediate:expert surfer but will not be traveling with boards.

Certainly not on the spot. I'd check the web for a surf shop in Munich. If you're not shopping on Sunday you can get almost anything you want somewhere.

Do they surf in the summer, or is there a chance to see them during October?
Written 11 August 2018
I have seen them in November and December. There just might be a few less than summer.
