Was walking down Leopoldstraße when I came across this triumphal arch. Bit of an odd place to put out as it's just in the middle of the roundabout and a little off the main tourist area. So this is called the Victory Gate in English and is a fairly standard three-arched arch. It's topped with the personification of Bavaria with a lion quadriga.

The front of the arch is richly decorated, but the almost bare rear of Siegestor mainly shows the inscription "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, urging peace". Originally dedicated to the glory of the Bavarian army, it's now a monument and reminder to peace.

Siegestor is just outside Munich University and if you take metro, get off at the Universitat station.

Quite like the Arc de Triomphe, it is at the straight line joining Luwigstrabe and Leopoldstrabe. A beautiful architecture by itself, and on both sides there are two separate small scruptures with LOVE on them.

When visiting Siegestor take a supplementary visit to the Munich University nearby. It is one of the top universities in Europe which has produced more than 35 Nobel Prize winners.

Very nice little arch between Ludwigstraße and Leopoldstraße, represents the entrance of prominent Schwabing, famous quarter for its nightlife. There is a majestic view through the arch while it is sunset towards Ludwigstraße. It's located about 1.75 km from the city centre. Recommendation!

This is a monumental arch. Is it worth taking a detour ? Depends on one's worldview. But for us, no.

Like Paris has its Arc de Triomphe, the Siegestor was founded in Munich in the 19th century as a triumphal arch in honor of the Bavarian army; although the design was based on the Arch of Constantine in Rome.
After the Second World War the arc was transformed into a symbol of peace.
On top of the arch is an allegorical image that personifies the state of Bavaria.
If you don't have much time in Munich, you can already see the monument from the Odeonsplatz.

This is a grand arch originally built in the 1800's but destroyed and rebuilt after the war. It was originally built to crown the achievements of the Bavarian army. It is the start of many impressive buildings going down Leopoldstrasse

In Berlin the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was bombed out in WW 2. But they have left the tower and cellar there today as a Memorial. Similarly with the 'Siegestor'.
It too was hit by bombs in 1946, but it was reconstructed as a memorial with new writing which now reads, "To Victory, Destroyed by War, Urging Peace."
