I will start by saying that I love the Munich zoo and for the past two years have been an annual card holder. Today's experience is what led to this review

Today my husband was taking our small son to the zoo so I can have a few hours alone (8.5 months pregnant here :)). Due to Covid-19 all visitors must reserve spots online before the day of the visit. Not a problem, I think it's great they are respecting social distancing requirements and limiting the number of visitors in a day. Online you cannot buy a year membership - I have always had to buy my memberships in person at the desk. According to the zoo website for year card holders you reserve a 0 Euro ticket and can go in. Since there is no option for buying annual tickets online I reserved 2 0Euro tickets for my son and husband - this way they have reserved spots to enter and can buy the annual membership in person at the desk. Today they were denied entry because the woman at the desk didn't know how to sell a year membership.... I love this zoo but they need to provide their staff better training and update their website.

We decided to visit the zoo on Sunday and got stuck in a huge queue that wouldn't move anywhere for several hours. We had a small child in the car. Bad signalization, terrible policeman yelling at people that wanted to enter the zoo, no orientation. After three hours we decided to leave.

Hellabrunn Zoo was opened in 1911 and became the first geozoo in the world since 1928. It is idyllically located on the Isar floodplains, a unique natural paradise in the middle of the city. More than 500 species of animals live on the generous grounds, arranged by continent. Over the last decades, the species-appropriate husbandry in the individual plants has become noticeable. Many new or modernized houses have been built (monkey house, new lion enclosure, mill village, bird aviary, turtle house, etc.).
In summer, the countless trees provide plenty of shade, the water is guided by the Isar into the park and makes the air fresher and cooler.
In winter, the park is also very charming and mostly there is not much going on.
The playgrounds are super great built, many study stations, there is enough gastronomy and food stalls, at the entrance parents can rent a boller cart for the children, the paths are barrier-free (except the aquarium, here you have to go down steps to the basement- I didn't see a ramp).
We have an annual pass and mostly enjoy a three-hour round, small walk. There is much to discover in every season.

The zoo is definitely recommended (annual pass for family is at 118 euros for two adults and up to four children). The normal admission per person is 18 euros.

Incredible zoo. Not too big so you can walk around and even stay and just "glance" at the animals you like, without spending your whole day there. In addition, the way everything is constructed, the fences, the alleys, bring up the nature undoubtedly close to you. At moments you just feel as actually being surrounded by that certain biome you are currently "at".

Enjoyed the animals there. The monkeys were so "childish" and energetic, they were running all around during the whole time.

The environment set up for children is just incredible... So much stuff is provided for them not to get bored and enjoy the day to the fullest.

Unfortunately, now, probably because of the COVID19 virus, most (if not all) of the shows are canceled. Still, it's a great experience you should definitely consider if you happen to be in Munich.

We like going to zoos and photographing animals, and usually go midweek because it should be quieter than weekends. We spent 4 hours here surrounded by constant screaming - from small children in baby buggies. The animals were mostly as far away as possible from the people (who can blame them) apart from the very stressed (and limping) tiger who constantly paced up and down its enclosure.

This zoo is squarely aimed at people with toddlers - there are playgrounds every 5 minutes, and for them this is a good place. Otherwise there are plenty of lovely things to do In Munich, and I would not recommend coming here.

We were in the park for 5.5 hours and were looking forward to seeing the advertised 500+ animal species. Unfortunately, it was in vain, because either there were none to see, or the animals had been relocated somewhere because the enclosures were being renovated or rebuilt, which was not announced. In total, we saw a maximum of 100 different animal species, or rather fewer. And the unusual animals that are important to us and that we don't have here were hardly to be seen.

Otherwise, we think the park itself is beautifully laid out, and you can walk around a lot and spend a lovely day. However, if there are hardly any animals to see, I can walk somewhere else and not pay the €18 entrance fee.

We have decided that we have been to the Hellabrunn Zoo once, but we will not go there again, if only because we come from the Ulm area and had a long journey. For what we were offered here, the journey and the entrance fee are definitely not worth it. So we don't really recommend it.

What a beautiful park! Very green and varied. Beautiful expansive outdoor enclosures and generous indoor enclosures, which offer the animals plenty of space for activity, but also rest. Various restaurants, playground, fun (interactive) information about the animals, playground and petting zoo. Benches everywhere to watch the animals in peace. Feeding moments with explanations in front of the audience. Special zoo, where the welfare of the animals is clearly paramount, but visitors also get value for money.

There are currently a lot of construction sites and empty enclosures in the Hellabrunn Zoo; efforts are obviously being made to renovate and improve the area, but I don't think the €18 entrance fee is justified at the moment!
The bird of prey "show" with only 3 different birds is nice, but nothing more.
All of the monkey enclosures (including the relatively new glass cases) are a very sad sight!
Absolutely not recommended!

Much more visitors than animals. The 'important' animals in particular are very economical. There are signs everywhere that the enclosures are unfortunately empty due to the extensive construction sites. I have really enjoyed coming here often over the last 60 years. Today the admission price was disproportionate to what we wanted to see. A pity!

We visited on a bit of a dreary day to start with, which was perfect weather to wander around the park.

Initially going to take our infant son here (also for myself haha), my husband noted that this was the best Zoo he has ever visited in his entire life, so that is saying something.

We found the landscape and setting very diverse, so it wasn't a straightforward 'walk through the park' so to speak. So many intricate enclosures and turns, that would take us to a new park of the park we hadn't yet seen.

Special mentions of both the aquarium and the enclosure around the monkeys. The anaconda was beyond fascinating to see up close. And the enclosures were done in such a way that it was easy to see / interact with the animals, but also give them their space.

Definitely recommend if you're in the area! Great for the whole family, even usually grumpy fathers.
