I am a lover of church architecture , particularly the wonderfully light white and gold interiors of Bavarian Churches. However, the Assamkirche has to be seen to be believed! A tiny church close to the city centre that brings excessive decoration to a new level. There is not a square inch (sorry, centimetre!) that is not smothered in moulding, gold... More

We had walked past this church several times while in Munich and had not realised it was even there. We were told to make sure we saw it and we are certainly glad that we did. The little Church is jammed between two houses and the outside certainly belies the richly adorned interior. When we arrived the gates were locked... More

Recommended to go here but a massive grill stopped us seeing anything at all! To be honest, not sure what all the fuss is about...

This little church has the most extreme décor of any I have ever seen. The intensity of the interior is enormous even when viewed from the entranceway through the grille gate, which still gives excellent views. It is quite difficult to pick up details through the all-encompassing decoration, but the overall effect is mind-boggling. Has to be seen to be... More

A beautiful little rococo church, well worth visiting. It is far enough away from Marienplatz that it is not crowded, so it is a nice contrast from joining the multitudes at St. Peter's. It is pretty dark inside, though, so I'm not sure it would be worth visiting on a cloudy day.

The doors are great, but inside you can only see the church through a gated grille at the moment. Not sure if this is permanent, but you can't see up close.

OH had seen this in the past and commented on it as we were walking into Marienplatz. We were looking for mass for next day so popped into see if Catholic. We were all awestruck! We came back for mass and it was just beautiful. It's quite a small church and the seats each hold about 5-6 people. The seats... More

Check it out on line, then go to see it as the visual experience is stunning. Have a good look at the confessionals when you are visiting.

well worth making a detour to what was the private chapel of the Asams. decor is completely over the top but there are gates preventing you from going very far in. makes St Peters seems quite restrained.
