- george sSuwanee, Georgia13 contributionsFun and cool.Gathering around and watching the show is an entertaining 30 mins. Marienplatz is a great central spot to hang out. The Rathskeller courtyard is a very cool spot to hang out and rest and at night has a great medieval feel.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 October 2023
- KYee CKuala Lumpur, Malaysia731 contributionsUnique clockThis clock is the centre piece of Marienplatz. The clock comes alive at 11am, 12pm, 5pm and 9pm daily. Its when the 43 bells and 32 figures will move and perform two historical events. You need to be there a bit early to secure a good spot to view the performance.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 October 2023
- castoff13Ridgewood, New Jersey111 contributionsGreat food in a lively atmosphereDined there twice and really like the place. Food is superb, and in generous portions, the bartender knows his/her cocktails, and the service is really good. There was no English menu the second time we went and they brought out one of the cooks, who was English, to walk us through the menu! Menu changes from day to day, so if they're serving their Osso Buco, order it, don't put that off, it is wonderfully done. Both times we were there were weekend nights during Christmas season, so it was happily noisy.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2023
- KarinnaCraigBrisbane, Australia1,040 contributionsWell worth a visitWe went sight seeing and looking for the glockenspiel and happened to arrive 2 minutes before the hour! Perfect timing to see and hear this amazing sight. So much history and great to get the opportunity to see it working Love it!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 March 2024
- DesertRose538 contributionsLovely and historical siteThe clock does its performance twice a day and it's really worth taking the time to stop and see it. It's only 15 minutes and surprisingly intricate considering the construction. Keep an eye out for the golden rooster at the top because it's easy to miss it flapping its wings at the end.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2024
- Sam MMH456 contributionsCuckoo clock still works!!!Thankfully we had a well needed guide during our tour of Old Town/City Center who shared with us that the glockenspiel (cuckoo clock) on the new town hall in Marienplatz still works. Stop by at 11am and you will see the dancing and hear the chimes of the clock. It is quite magical and something which NEEDS to be seen/heard while in Munich.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 July 2024
- MRichardson2014Lake of Bays, Canada1,001 contributionsNot to be missedWe were able to attend the 5:00 pm Glokenspiel. Such a delight - the bells and the very animated figures. The show is daily at 11:00, noon and 5:00 pm. There is a restaurant right in front of the Rathaus. For the price of a drink you can sit while waiting for and then watching the show.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 September 2024
- Stephen CWollongong, Australia795 contributionsSpectacular from the outside - magnificent on the inside.Recommend you just pop your head inside this wonderful masterpiece and not just enjoy the wonderful exterior splendour. This is the central cornerstone of the Marienplatz old town centre of Munich. The history and wealth of this city and Bavaria is on display in and around Marienplatz. We waited for the hour strike with hope of seeing the clock in full swing but alas not at 11am the day we were there - not sure when the main display is scheduled. Very impressive externally but definitely worth spending a little time to wonder inside. You will be well rewarded with variety of cascading internal staircases leading in all sorts of directions and levels - truly a rival to Hogwarts and its moving staircases. There are wonderful painted/stained glass windows, exceptional wooden ceilings and features, wonderful mosaic patterned tile work and masonry work at the highest levels. You can use the elevator or stairs to access the upper levels from where I think for a fee you can access the clock tower.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 September 2024

Foreign tourist, especially from overseas are wowed by the look of this building. As a local tour guide I can highly recommend to go and see it. They have the "Glockenspiel" at 11am, at noon, and in summer at 5pm in the tower of the city hall.

The glockenspiel plays at 12 noon. (Apparently also at 11am?) It is very popular, so best to arrive about 10 - 15 minutes before noon to reserve a good spot. The show lasts about 15 minutes. Wait for the golden rooster at the end!! Definitely worth a visit.

The Glockenspiel rings everyday at 1100 and 1200. There is a sign by the entrance with this information. We had to come back the next day since we missed it.
You can actually go up, but we didn't due to time constraints. The pricing and opening times are also on the sign by the entrance. It was 4 Euros for adults when I was there.
The entrance to go up is through the arching doors with a coat of arms. There is a ticket office in the back to get the ticket and to enter the tower.
The show is quite interesting especially if it's your first time. We were near the back of the plaza to get a good view of it.
The building itself is quite intricate and really nice to look at. There is so much to see on the building and the Glockenspiel itself. This would be something I would be keen to go again just to head up the tower but the area itself has quite a few things to do too.

On our first day we positioned ourselves in a cafe overlooking the main square so we could have a great view of the glockenspiel. Unfortunately what we didn’t realise was it only comes on at 11am, 12pm & 5pm!
We returned a different day to view this. The building itself is spectacular and we had high expectations… however it was rather underwhelming to say the least. It did make us laugh though how bad it was.
Still worth a look though if you are passing just don’t expect much.

The building is beautiful with a lot of history. If you are able to fit it into your schedule, the show is at 11:00am and 12:00pm. It is helpful to understand the history and meaning behind the show, which should be covered by any tour going to this location.

A super fun spectacle to experience on your visit to Marienplatz. It happens daily at 11am and 12pm. The show lasts about 13 minutes and takes place on different levels of the tower in sequence. In our highly computerized world, it is nice to be able to marvel at the inventiveness and skill of craftsmen of a bygone era in creating a completely mechanical showcase. (see videos of the performance on the videos tab of my profile page)

On what date is the last 5:00pm show? We have only one time to see the wonders of this magnificent show on 19 October.

How do you get to the observation deck in the Rathaus in Munich? You mentioned it in your post and I cannot find anything online other than comments saying the you can go up to the observation deck.
Thanks,
Mitch

There is an elevator on the left hand side as you go thru the main gate. this takes you to the 3rd or 4th floor where you can pay to take a different elevator to the observation deck
