Germany's only Alpine National Park Lofty, wild and majestic, "King" Watzmann (2713m) reigns over the Berchtesgadener Land as he surveys his kingdom: Berchtesgaden National Park. High mountains, deep valleys and crystal-clear alpine streams define this protected area bordering Austria. "Allow nature to remain in its natural state" is the motto of Germany’s only Alpine National Park. Berchtesgaden National Park is located in the southeast of Germany, in Bavaria and adjoining the Austrian Salzburg region. Founded in 1978, the park includes an area of 210 square kilometres and is owned by the federal state of Bavaria. In addition, the park is the core and buffer zone of the biosphere reserve Berchtesgadener Land.

There are numerous hiking trails in the park. Easily accessible and well-marked. You can basically walk from town to town in this part of the world. Wonderful.

This was a stop on the Panorama Tour. We took our guide Walter's advice and skipped the restaurants and shops and walked to the other side of the lake. It was a bit of a hike but the view was definitely worth it. Would have...More

Say no more. Your breath will be taken away everywhere you go in the national park. Be prepared for it to be very busy at peak times.

This is the most well-kept national park ever. They affort a lot to keep this beautiful environment as it is and they manage it. You can enjoy the hiking paths and discover the magnificent nature.

We only spent a day here, what a shame! Should spend a week here to be fully relaxed. It is really like stepping back 50-80 years in time (at least). We will be back!

Although the centre is worth a visit the exhibits are less interactive than I am used to and therefore it is limited in appeal. It does however provide a good grounding in the area and the flora, fauna and wildlife that is around you.

If you are staying in Salzburg, this is definitely important to build into your itinerary. You can have a great day journeying up to Eagle's Nest and finishing the evening around the lake. You will encounter beautiful scenery and tranquil locations.

It's all beautiful Bavarian scenery, but make sure you get to the Eagles Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) where, ignoring the historical factors for a moment, I felt were the views were stunning. It is simply breathtaking and we took loads of photographs, but they just don't do...More

Sorry, we were just on a day trip to Berchtesgaden. The tourist bureau would be of greater help I'm sure. Have fun!

If you just want to do a day hike, simply park (cost a couple Euros and you save money if your hotel has a pass card) and hike. Berchtesgaden National Park has a flyer that you can download in English as well as other... More
