About
The Dokumentation Obersalzberg is a place of learning and remembrance in Berchtesgaden. The museum informs about the history of Obersalzberg, the former residence of Adolf Hitler and center of power of the National Socialist dictatorship. The exhibition with the historic bunkers shows how mass crimes were planned and ordered in the idyllic mountain landscape.

- azogalAnn Arbor, Michigan1,514 contributionsVery well done centerWe went to the newly reopened center and were very impressed. Entrance and a smartphone audio guide were free. The audio guide was easy to use and you could choose either a 40-minute tour or a 90-minute tour. Displays included the history of the area as a tourist attraction, its Nazi history, and its current status. On the lower level you can access a small portion of Hitler‘s bunker. There are lockers, vending machines, an eating area, and bathrooms on the lower level.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- Sharon LBirmingham, United Kingdom18 contributionsA great experience for allOnly 5 euros - A must trip if you interested in WW2. So much information and the place is amazingly organised with head set in different languages. If visiting Eagles Nest, make sure you leave time to enjoy here too - you need about 2 hours for a relaxed tour. Then there is also the walk down to the site of the Berghof just a 5 minute walk down, but a steep walk back up. Lots of areas of interest and some stunning view. Of visiting Eagles Nest - it doesn’t open until mid May 😢Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 May 2024
- Jonathan THope, Indiana403 contributionsComing to terms with evilAnyone interested in NAZI party history should pay a visit here to get an honest look at how the party transformed the area. The center is a strong museum on its own, but then being able to entry a portion of the underground bunker complex that connected all the party leaders homes adds a very unique insight. The engineering is so impressive by itself as to be worth a visit.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 June 2024
- Sam MMH452 contributionsWish we had more time.Unfortunately we were rushed through the museum as we had timed tickets to see the Eagle’s Nest and didn’t get sufficient time to really view everything in the museum. In retrospect I would have skipped the Eagle’s Nest and just stayed and toured the museum. It is quoted sobering, yet incredibly important to see. Having visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, I thought the history and perspective here does so much more to teach about the atrocities of Hitler.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 July 2024
- Graham969Colchester, United Kingdom28 contributionsExcellent modern museum and larger than expected. Our first visit to the museum, and we were impressed by the amount of information, the size of the museum, the excellent audio tour, the way the story of the area is told , and the atmospheric bunkers (a real highlight). We opted for the 80 minute audio tour but if you stop to read all the displays as well you could be there for 3+ hours. It goes without saying that the museum is a must see if you’re interested in modern history.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 August 2024

We were not sure what to expect from this place, but after visiting the Eagles Nest, we were still curious to see the bunker. We arrived at 4 pm and there were a few people outside, because there was a sign saying to wait. People told us that you had to book online, but I went inside to ask if we could go in and they said yes (3-4Euros). All of the displays were in German but there were English handouts in each of the sections. If you are not interested in the displays you can go straight to the bunker. There was more there than we expected. Definitely worth the visit.

This region above the Berchtesgaden city, was the headquarter of Nazi Party in Bavaria. Its includes :
Bergorf , Hitler private residence - nothing to see, it was destroyed after the war, but there is the Hotel Zun Turken - this hotel was "taken"by the nazi party in 1933 and was used by the SS security guard.
Residence of others Nazi leaders, like Goring (demolished) and Bormann (demolished) . In this area we have now the Intercontinental Hotel.
Eagle's Nest ( Kehlsteinhaus) IT IS UNFORGETTABLE.
The Bunkers System.
The Platerhoff. (demolished)
Obersalzber center of documentation.
There is few buildings remaning, but it really worth a visit.

Have read so many books about this place in my studies that while in salzburg i took the bus to visit. Walking from the hotel zum turken to the centre takes you through what was hitlers berghof house. there are still a few walls there . Was an uneasy feeling being in a place that by all accounts was a place that mass murder were ordered but it was interesting to carry on to the centre all the same. the undergound bunker system used by Hitler and the SS were open and you have to go back to the hotel to get into them. for 3 euros each. it was spooky inside them and you could see bullet holes from were the US army attacked the last remaining SS in germany. if you like your history about the war,Hitler etc then you will find this interesting.

Some of my fellow reviewers suggested skipping the Eagle's Nest, but I cannot imagine that. We saw the Eagle's Nest at the opening time, 10AM (and it was NOT crowded). Then we went into the Documentation Center around 11:30 and it was NOT crowded. There is so much information to see and read that I believe it should be given more time, but we did not have enough time. I think you should have 2 hrs here. Do not skip this, you will go home thinking about what you have learned.

We visited Obersalzberg for the Dokumentation and to see the former building sites. Firstly, the Dokumentation is a truly informative and open account and history of Obersalzber and the rise and fall of Hitler. You can spend hours and hours reading through the boards of information, looking at photos and documents and watching videos; in addition to walking through the ruins of a bunker system.
The only disappointment at the Dokumentation was that all the information is presented in Germany and you need to use an audio guide to follow in English.
We arrived at the Dokumentation Parking area (same one as Eagles Nest - Kehlsteinhaus) at 9:00 (monday) and there seemed to be plenty of parking however, by 11:00 the place was completely full, with people parking on the surrounding roads. My recommendation - Get there early! It is also much more pleasant walking through the sites with few other people.
After Dokumentation we wanted to see the Berghof ruins, SS camp and HQ etc. What we realised is that all the places (naturally I guess) were very close together in Obersalzberg and only a few minutes walk from the Dokumentation. From the Dokumentation, you walk pass the entry to a small path which leads you down hill to the Berghof ruins (4 min walk). Continue along path for 2 min and you will find the Zum Türken Hotel (former SS HQ and bunker system). Another 2 min up the hill towards intercontinental hotel and you will find the path again leading you back to Dokumentation.
An easy walk, everything is closer than you think and you get to see what it all the former building sites look like now.

I'm not one to usually rave about history museums (I much prefer science and natural history) but I thought this was a really excellent musem. It was well laid-out, walking you through the history starting from Hitler's rise to power and the effect on the village and citizens of Obersalzburg (where Hitler had his base and where this museum can be found). The audio guide was really excellent and is a MUST for anyone that does not understood German, as otherwise the information is only in German - having said that, the audio guide seemed to be a lot more detailled than the information available, so I would probably recommend it for Germans too! Allow plenty of time for the tour, I think the audio is over 2.5 hours long as well as a half-hour video and a bunker system to explore as well, so we eventually had to start skipping bits out and just listening to those sections which were of most interest to us.
All in all, very informative and great value for money, at only 4 of 5 euros each (including the audio guide). There is also parking on-site, although this is paid. From the car park, it is then possible to buy tickets and catch the bus up to the Eagles' Nest too.

Quiero llegar a Obersalzberg en mi propio vehículo. ¿Desde allí puedo tomar un autobús hasta el Nido del Águila? O ¿Tengo que reservar una excursión en grupo obligatoriamente??

When I was there on July 1st the bunkers were still under going renovations. Unfortunately so were the hotel bunkers at the hotel.
I was disappointed too!

Where exactly... in what town.. is the parking area where you take the bus up? Planning to drive there and not sure if it is well marked from freeway.
Written 25 June 2017
The Documentation Obersalzberg is located a couple of miles east of the town of Berchtesgaden on highway 319. The bus stop up to the Eagles Nest is next to the Documentation Obersalzberg.

What address should I enter into the GPS to find my way to the Documentation Oberszalsberg?

I'm sorry I don't know. If you enter the address for the kleinsteinhaus, you'll be at the same parking lot. Documentation Center sits below the parking lot for the eagles nest . And once you're nearing obersalzburg signage is very good

Hello dear traveler. The destination for your GPS should read Eagle's nest. It is just next to the bus station (DB) which takes you up to the top of the mountain. You can't reach Hitler's villa at the top without using this shuttle. There is a large parking lot right next to the center and the bus station Bon Voyage.

Hello, We will be visiting the Documentation Center in the very near future. We would also like to see the Berghof Site as we are history buffs. Does anyone know if there is a path that you can walk from the Documentation Obersalzberg down to the Berghof location? And if so, how far of a walk is it? We understand that their is now a historical marker there. Thank you in advance!
Written 9 July 2016
I went in June 2015, after you have been to the bunker, walk out of the main building and walk down the path to the left into the trees for about 10 minutes. You will come across an information panel which marks the site where the Berghof, stood. All that is left is a concrete retaining wall which is now overgrown with trees.
