The botanical garden is beautiful, huge well maintained gardens and flower houses. The zoo part was a total flop on the other hand. There are site constructions going on so it is not only confusing how to get where, but also when and only to see there is no way in or see anything.
Zoo area was in a saddening state. Most of the big animals seem to be looked after poorly, like the elephants (they seemed drugged), rhino, monkeys outside on the rocky part (the filth there was waooo), chimpanzee's food must have quality issues, as the physical condition of many was below saddening, mind you their living area was clean. Giraffes seemed happy, so did the camels.
Some fish tanks would require more cleaning because of the amount of fishes they contain but overall kept in good condition.
Food for visitors is overpriced and if you want something on the go then low quality too. There are some restaurants which serve hot/ cooked food, but you must eat there, and their prices are high (well if you go there once a year, may be ok).
Toilet facilities good and can be found around the whole area. Lots of visitors, playing areas for children good, well maintained. Standard entry is 19 euros + 1 euro donation which they charge without asking whether you want or not to give, or what you actually are donating for (1 euro is not the end of the world, but basic courtesy to inform visitors about the actual price and option).
I would suggest visiting because of the historical buildings and the garden's plant variety, layout and architecture, specially between late spring to autumn. The state of some animals kept there can be improved massively, just do actually something more than now about it. Happiness matters, even for animals.

I visited this zoo with my sister back in late April. In short, we had a horrible experience. My sister is autistic and has a (Danish) disabled ID and therefore the right to bring a person alongside her for help. We were met with rude and degrading staff and felt stepped on from the start. My sister had a panic attack (something I have not seen from her in 10 years). We were helped by two really sweet German ladies that helped translate for us as the staff in the ticket sale had very bad English or plain refused to talk to us. When we finally got into the zoo we were not impressed. It is a very standard “city zoo” and the educational part of running a zoo (all the knowledge about the animals) was only on very small signs and in German, something that does not match with a zoo that prides itself on conservation work where knowledge is power. We asked for a supervisor multiple times but apparently, no one was to be found. I have written them an email and have heard nothing back despite it being a full month. We would NOT recommend the zoo, especially if you want to learn about animals or have a disability.

Great experience for those who are fascinated with plants/flowers. The Garden/Park doesn't seem as big from the outside but it is huge once you get inside. Recommend visiting during the summer in the late evening when the temperature is cooler and it is less crowded. Wear comfortable shoes, pack snacks and water, and be prepared to complete a half 1/2 marathon. There are plenty of areas to take breaks as needed which makes the visit less of a task and more enjoyable.

Very nice place to visit at the end of the week.
I think they have almost all common animals.
They seem to create very good conditions in the cages.
Parking is always full and you might spent half an hour before you find a parking place.

Apart from the fact that the access and parking situation is catastrophic, the zoo was incredibly overcrowded. We had to wait a full half an hour at the ticket office with two families in front of us. When we asked, we were told that the family was taking out an annual membership and that it just took so long to enter the data.
In the zoo itself there was nothing but crowds and the constant danger of being crushed by strollers. Long queues in front of the individual houses, you were herded through the Amazon house like a herd of cows and had hardly any opportunity to look at any animal for more than a few seconds as it was pushed past. The same thing happened in the Aquarim.
Dear Wilhelma, as long as you don't introduce a visitor limit and prohibit strollers from being brought in, I'll never come back!

There are many cool sites to see. For sure I would say that 2-3 horus is definitely not enought to see the whole park, and it would take you at least the entire day to see it all.
If you feel like having just a calm journey and just to behold beautiful sites, see some animals (incl. insects and spiders), found new plants never seen before, then i would certainly recommend to come.
I think it is especially great place for familie rest, or with loved one, if one prefers just to have a calm day in the natural surroudings.
By the way if you are student do not hesitate to assert that otherwise cashiers may just charge a regular fee for your entrance, which is nearly as twice as for student

Awesome place to spend time with family.
The zoo garden is huge and you can walk for hours watching the animals. If you’re with kids bring your food as the food option is not that great.
When you enter get the zoo program and mark the hours when it’s feeding time for the animals to enjoy the spectacle. The sea lions feeding is especially entertaining happening twice a day.

Review of Wilhelma Zoo in Stuttgart
Today we visited the Wilhelma in Stuttgart with our children. The zoo is really spacious and offers enough space to stay relaxed even on well-attended days. We were initially worried that the parking lot would fill up and crowds would push through the facility – fortunately, this was not the case, so we could admire the various animals in peace.
As in other zoos, however, there are the typical points that cloud the pleasure of visiting a little. The monkeys and other animals are naturally housed in enclosures, and in our opinion the elephants in particular have relatively little space. This can cloud the impression, but you usually know this in advance and are prepared for it.
A special event was the "Lantern Run" . Unfortunately, this was not the highlight you might hope for. With around 200 visitors, the mood was rather subdued. It was neither sung nor instructed, and without musical accompaniment, running the lantern seemed almost a little superfluous. A more active tuning would certainly have created more atmosphere.
In summary, the Wilhelma offers a nice experience for the family if you get involved in the given restrictions of a zoo and do not have too high expectations of the events.

I took my 4 year old here for the day and we both enjoyed ourselves. While I thought the animals might interest her more but both of us enjoyed the botanical gardens most and loved exploring the greenhouses & taking photos of the many different plant varieties.
It is a large zoo which goes up hill so prepare for some walking with lots of breaks for little legs.
Food is quite expensive so bring plenty of snacks. We got a bretzal with pesto, mozzarella & tomato the kiosk behind the pavilion for €4ish.
There are plenty of indoor exhibits too if it is rainy.

Botanical garden and zoo are certainly worth visiting. There are temperature controlled buildings with various plants and outdoor gardens/zoo. The zoo is enhanced by well maintained green spaces and terraced portions of the gardens. This makes for a little more walking, but enhances the experience. The time of year we visited (September) impacted the gardens as is to be expected. Animal exhibit areas were nice, but in what I will call mid-point in the timeline from barred cages to the larger natural habitats some zoos use today. Animals have some natural roaming areas here. Went to this location easily using public transportation.

Hallo,

are you allowed to take your dog inside?
Written 12 September 2017
Do not bring your dog! Dogs are strictly not allowed. That said the site is set up for dog owners, at the main entrance, there are dog kennels, which can be rented for a charge. I think this is a great service if you cannot leave your dog at home.
Until you are there you cannot appreciate just how close you actually get to the animals, you won't be able to control your dog on site. In the Amazon House for example the fruit bats, butterflies and birds are with you, I'm talking inches away, if not on you!
Have a great time, and leave the dog at home.
