This enormous wine barrel would have held enough wine for the entire castle in times of siege. It make a great backdrop for a photo opportunity. Do not miss this when you are visiting the castle.

The entrance ramp to this massive underground wine cask is located in front of the Friedrich's Wing of the castle. It is on the far side as you enter the castle grounds. It is so large that about 50 adults could stand on the platform on top of it. It is a great spot for a tourist photo. There are stairs to climb to the top of the barrel from one side and then you come back down on the other side. It is a quick visit and well-worth your time while you are visiting the castle. Although it is just a curiosity now, it had a practical purpose at the time to supply liquid sustenance during times of siege. There is also a wine bar and restaurant in this part of the castle.

If it's not the biggest barrel in the world where is there a bigger one! Go for a climb up onto its back and take a picture or two and then move on. A gimmick but a unique one.

This was definitely worthwhile to check out in the Heidelberg Castle grounds. It is a huge oak barrel - the biggest one I have ever seen!

The Heidelberg Tun is a monstrous wine barrel located in the Heidelberg Castle, built in 1751, reputedly requiring 130 oak trees in the construction. It's approximately 8 meters in diameter and holds 229,000 liters. Some claim it's the largest in the world, but even if not, it's one huge barrel! You can climb stairs alongside and even walk on a platform built on top of the barrel. Amusingly, unaware tourists inevitably line up for photos of another (very) large barrel in the room before the Heidelberg Tun, thinking it's the one. While, it's also massive, it pales in comparison to the real deal and you'll hear tourists shriek in amazement when they encounter the real "big daddy"!

Dont forget to visit the castle when you go to Heidelberg and take some awesome pictures of the "cellar" ! There is also a very beautiful wine bar inside there that you have several wine choices to sit and taste with your friends after the whole stroll of the castle!

This amazing big,big indeed wine barrel with the capacity of 220,000 liters or 58,000 gallons is a popular photo spot in the cellars of Heidelberg Castle. The cellars also feature a bar nowadays, but the prices are somewhat expensive. Great nook of the castle to explore, admire the barrel and have an expensive glass of wine.

A genuine look back into History of Taxation - the Barrel was used to collect taxes from the wine growers. Who also cheated by watering down the wine!

Yeah, it's big - but what is missing is the background (like that this is the fourth version, that it appeared in many famous books, and that it was hardly ever used for wine)....
