This recent statue of the little monkey replaces an old statue from the past. Touching the monkey's butt would bring money. You can pose with this monkey by putting your head under his. The mirror allows us to reflect our true selves.

This is a modern recreation of an older statue, a fun idea concerning vanity. You can put your head inside the monkey’s. Don’t forget to spot the little bronze mice next to the statue, which symbolise when the mice and rats would move to high ground with impending floods.

Personally I thought it is just a bit of a laugh, but I understand those who question its relevance next to the historical landmark of the old bridge.
Installed in 1979 it’s a bit of a tourist magnet and various things are meant to happen if you rub certain parts of the statue.
Well I haven’t had any more children and I am still waiting for monetary fortune. However, I did rub its paw last time and I am back in Heidelberg, so perhaps that bit does work. Also, look out for the mice , they are easily overlooked

Bronze statue placed near the gate of the Bridge of Arte (Carl Theodor Bridge). The former northern bridge tower had a monkey relief, which was destroyed during the War of the Grand Alliance in the 17th century. The statue was created in 1977 as a result of a competition to redesign the monkey.
It is said that stroking the pinky and forefinger of the right hand will bring him back to Heidelberg, stroking the mirror will bring prosperity, and touching the mouse will bring him good fortune.

A statue of a metal monkey that you will find next to the Brückentor and of course surrounded by popular belief.
If you touch the animal you will definitely come back to Heidelberg and/or your finances will improve.
If you really want to be a monkey, it's best to stick your head in there too.

Just across from the street from our hotel is this piece of modern art. Tourist groups often congregate in front of it. You can tell that many have rubbed the statue to make a wish. Next to it are a couple of mice and that serve the same purpose. Maybe wish that you can return to Heidelberg as it is a beautiful city!

I am so tired of this stupid monkey. I grew up in Heidelberg in the 1960s and there was no Brückenaffe; it was only tacked on in 1978. Oh sure, they say it replaced the original which was there in the Middle Ages, but during the 18th-20th centuries, when Heidelberg acquired its romantic reputation, there was no Brückenaffe.
OK, so if you want to stand in line and have your partner take a picture of you with your head looking out from a phoney monkey statue, go right ahead. But don't think this is an authentic part of Heidelberg historical culture: it is not, it is purely there for the tourists.

This bronze sculpture by Professor Gernot Rumpf was installed there in 1979. But there was a bridge monkey in Heidelberg as far back as the 15th century. Old drawings of the town show it next to the tower on the north end of the Old Bridge. It disappeared during the Palatinian War of Succession (1689/93). The monkey is said to be good luck. Rubbing the mirror will bring you money; rubbing his fingers will ensure your return to Heidelberg; and rubbing the little bronze mice nearby will bring you fertility. Others said that you have to look in the mirror and think of you as you realy are deep in your soul. For me the sculpture resemble with a cat rather than a monkey... Pretty square on the way you walk to the church from the bridge.

This bronze statue of a monkey was erected in 1979, but it honors a tradition that bridge has featured a monkey at this spot since the 15th Century. It is a fun place to snap a photo and share with your friends.
