Probably the most beautiful square in Freiburg. Dominated by the Cathedral, located in the middle and surrounded by old buildings, with beautiful architecture. Here is also the Historisches Kaufhaus/Historical Merchants' Hall and Museum für Stadtgeschichte/City History Museum.
There are several restaurants, a hotel and a big flywheel market of local producers.

It is best to visit the square in the morning when the market is open (between 8:00 to 13:00). Otherwise, the square is empty. There are also shops, souvenir stores and restaurants around the square, aside from the historical buildings. The most prominent is the red building, which is the Historical Merchant's Hall.

I loved this area, especially at night. Live music, a market and some quaint cafes nearby. Nice place to take the beautiful architecture in. Bur besides that not much more but what else does one expect of a church square.

We came here before & there was the fresh food market, also fast food stand, the BBQ German sausage were so tasty & hot from the grill.
Today we visited the beautiful Munster church which was amazing.
It's just behind the Kaiser Joseph street, the main shopping area.
Can easily spend a good couple of hours there.

This square is located around the cathedral of Freiburg. It is the centre of old town. There is a lot of space, nice looking buildings and a good atmosphere. Several restaurants and terraces (not the best for quality) are located here.

Very nice central place of Freiburg. Right close to the cathedral and with a few rivers where the kids play with boats=)

This large, open-air market is there every day except Sunday and open until about mid-day. You can buy delicious food, fruit, wines, and crafts. This was our breakfast and lunch spot almost every day!

The market opens from Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. When you stand in front of the main entrance of the cathedral, you will find the stands of the farmers from the farms around Freiburg with their own, fresh produce. Vegatables, herbs, palnts, meat, wine, flowers, fish, fruit of the region. To the right you will still find some fresh produce, but this will come from farther away - oranges from Sicily, artichokes from the Bretagne, Soap from the Provence and a nice variety of craftsmen products from salsas to handmade brushes.
It is worth to take a stroll, eat maybe an Wurst-Sandwich or buy some fruits to eat, taste a wine or take some packed Blackforest specialties with you.
Very relaxing.

Munsterplatz - this is a main square of Freiburg, of course, must be here and see. The main plaza has an impressive Cathedral (Munster), many restaurants and cafes, shops, Historical Merchant House, City History Museum and of course, the colorful produce and craft market six days a week (closed Sunday only). You can find here flowers, herbs, fruits, veggies, etc. The historic market around the cathedral has been here since the 11th century. On the giant buttress to the left of the cathedral's main door, behind the freestanding column, look for the engravings with different years next to oval and circular shapes. These were the officially decreed sizes for the loaf of bread; customers could bring their purchases here to be sure they weren't being cheated. Deceitful merchants faced immediate punishment. Notice that the size of the loaf, shrunk between 1270 and 1317. The price stayed the same, but the bread got smaller....medieval inflation. Sound familiar?

We stayed at Zum Roten Baren, an old guest house on Oberlinden. It was very comfortable there, and very central.
