- jaimeelsabioMaryland4,320 contributionsCash only, so plan accordinglyWe walked to the funicular from our hotel for the exercise. While only 2.2km the majority is up hill. Coming back was a breeze. We arrived early in the day, there was no wait, and we got n the first car. A round trip ticket was 7€, cash only. There are a couple ticket machines that supposedly take credit cards. The ride to the top took five minutes. At the top there are trails for biking or hiking, restrooms, and a restaurant (also cash only). There are good views from the top. When we got back to the bottom around noon, the line was probably 30-40 people long waiting to go up, and the parking lot was completely full.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 May 2023
- FamilyofFiveSFSan Mateo, California115 contributionsExcellent way to view the Black ForestWe rode the funicular up and down the mountain for a spectacular view of the Black Forest. We highly recommend that getting a ride to the top and riding the cable car down and then walking from the base into the small town of Baden Baden. There are spectacular views and very nice residential homes on the way down. The town of Baden Baden is lush with greenery and there are some very nice restaurants for lunch or dinner after the 20 min hike.Visited July 2023Written 5 August 2023
- lama704London, United Kingdom71 contributionsWorth visitingA nice place with a cable train and excellent views. It’s only 15 mins by bus 204 or 205 from the city centre and definitely worth visiting. An observation tower has a lift that takes you even higher. Certainly a good option on 1-2 days’ trip. Fun for both adults and kidsVisited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 August 2023
- Out This DoorMesa, Arizona236 contributionslovely but not a top thing to doThe two trains run continuously, one going up while the other comes down. About 20 people can fit at a time. The ride itself takes barely 10 min and is pretty as you go steeply up through the forest. At the top is a restaurant with an outdoor terrace, a playground, a stone monument, and the viewing tower. I was confounded by how to open the door and gave up twice but figured out that you had to press the square button and open the door at the same time (there’s wild boars in the area, I guess they can get in?). In the tower are bathrooms. The spiral staircase goes up to two different viewing levels. The first is completely indoors with glass windows and a high ledge. The next viewing level up is open air, with a high ledge to protect us. Either viewing area provides lovely views of the forest, Baden-Baden, the Hohenberg castle, and farms. No additional charge to enter the tower. Many people come up on their bikes. There is a very tiny gift shop selling magnets and postcards. It is enjoyable if you have extended time in Baden-Baden.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 September 2023

If you do 1 thing in Baden Baden, do this. Apart from the views from the top, the ride up itself if pretty special - especially if, like us, you saw a naked man sitting solo in the carriage coming downhill! He looked like Rasputin in case you stumble across him yourself.

From the description in the city brochure, we thought the walk would be easy from Paradies Park to the bottom of the lift. It was quite strenuous. I recommend taking a car or bus to the lift, as we were too tired from the trek uphill to explore much once we got to the top. Fine view of Basel and the area. The restaurant at the top was odd - 3 people seemingly working, but very poor service and expensive, mediocre food and drink.

Nice ride up the mountain above Wiesbaden. Beautiful church and a couple restaurants on top. City bus #1 takes you right to the funicular.

The funiculars are brand new and in fab condition. Unfortunately the day we visited was exceptionally cloudy and we couldn’t see any of the incredible views from the top, but it was worth the ride all the same.

We took the train up and down. The views from the top is breath taking. You can also take the elevator to the top deck of the tower for even better views. It is a must see in Baden Baden

Hi,
Did you go there using public transport? If so, do you know what's the quickest way to get to Merkur Mountain from Baden Baden Train Station? I read some threads here about using the bus to the town and catch another bus to the Funicular Station but these info was a bit outdated. We intend to just spend maximum of three hours from the train station to the mountain and back. Many thanks

Hi
We took a direct bus from the train station to Merkurwald. It runs once every hour if I remember correctly. We spent 20-25 mins waiting for the direct bus instead of taking one to the city centre. On the way back, we got down at the city centre. 3 hrs might be a bit tight in my opinion as waiting for the bus takes a bit of time and the ride takes even longer.

1. Would like to go on the funicular train up to the top. Will be driving a car from Baden-Baden airport. Is there a parking area before boarding the Funicular , and how far do you need to walk? Would like to know more on the walking required as will be having small children.
2. Where do you get the tickets from
3. Is there a schedule/opening hours info I can look up. Thanks.
Debbie

1. Yes, there is plenty of parking at the entrance. The funicular is easily accessible from the parking lot with small kids and carriages.
2. There's an automated machine - bring small denominations of cash to purchase tickets. You can also selected the language to purchase the tickets. You may be lucky and have an attendant nearby to help you.
3. Google MerkurBergbahn hours opening times and ticket info.
