About
The New York architect Richard Meier described Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, which opened in October 2004, as a “jewel in the park”. Along the famous Lichtentaler Allee, he created a unique architecture that is bathed in light, in which the interior and exterior, contemporary art and romantic park landscape are in constant dialogue. Spread over four levels, Museum Frieder Burda presents artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries in changing exhibitions. These focus, on the one hand, on themes and artists relevant to the collection, for example, Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann or Sigmar Polke. On the other hand, they also present current contemporary positions such as those of Andreas Gursky, JR and Katharina Grosse. The museum is privately funded by Stiftung Frieder Burda, a foundation with full legal capacity under Germany’s Civil Code.

Whether or not you enjoy this place depends on the Artist of the moment and your own perspective. There were "Artsnobs" present standing about looking important discussing the meaning or idea presented. However, the installations were meaningless for me. Any other time I may have a different feeling about this place. This day I can only say it was OK. Interestingly the GPS could not get us to this museum by car. We drove round and round. Finally we parked and then use the walking GPS and were able to find the museum.

Open despite COVID. Exhibition (unsurprisingly) about baths and bathing. Mixture of old pictures and modern installations, including video of people in the Gellert Baths in Budapest (shot with consent, one hopes)

A sleek museum set within the park. The collections of Frieder and Franz Burda are not permanently exhibited (nothing was showing on my visit), and so you may be reliant on the current show being of interest.
While there is a permanent James Turrell installation work, Accretion Disc, that should be showing (which was the main reason for visiting today), it is currently out of service (Nov. 2021).

For someone whose first language is not german, but can converse in english and some italian and spanish, we were lost as to why all displays were explained in german and french only? We spent an hour in the gallery, were not able to follow any written displays, so quite a lot was lost on us. Rather disappointing. The space itself is bright and well laid out. Would probably not visit again, as I do not appreciate being not catered for as non native german speaker.

The building and location of this museum is fabulous as it is right by the park in town. However, your experience is totally dependent on the rotating exhibit. When we were there in July, the art was sparse and disappointing.
Be sure to check if there is a worthwhile exhibit before you visit.

Very dissappointing. It is a beautiful building well suited to modern art. The special exhibition was Neo Rauch. What I didn't realise was that the whole museum was given over to his work. If you liked it, fine, but I didn't and that made it very poor, especially at the price. I expected one floor of Rauch and the rest to be the permanent works.

The brochure specifies that the Frieder Burda collection contains some 800 items, mostly paintings. Yet when you visit this museum (spectacular architecture, by the way) there is only a temporary exhibition which you may like or not, but no items of the permanent collection. I enquired about this and was told that the actual Frieder Burda collection is rarely visible and that the exhibits are in storage. A perfect waste of time, as far as my wife and I are concerned.

Visited for the James Turrell exhibition in June 2018. While the artworks dislayed were interesting (5 installations, several holographic images and a series of drawings), the museum, despite stating on its website that it is ‘internationally renowned’, does not bother to provide English explanations or audioguides, only French and German. To me this does not constitute an international institution, but a rather provincial one that excludes the vast majority of potential visitors. Given that there is an English translation of their website, it is reasonable to expect that this option would apply also to their gallery experience. I would love to know the thought process behind this decision, though having looked at other reviews of this gallery, this issue is not limited to this exhibition.
The building itself is light and well laid out. There are plentiful lockers for storing your bag and a standard overpriced giftshop in the basement. The bus stop from the railway station stops almost right outside.

the building is clean cut, glas and white. But this is all there is to see, and to see the buiding there is no need to pay 12 Euro (15 US $) entrance.
The exhibitions are boring!

Expensive entrance price for paintings which I did not like (I like the French artist Othoniel on the basement, tough). The place might be worth seeing because the architecture of the museum is great. It is quite a small museum.
