A great quick stop to see hundreds of historic Guignol puppets

This is a great quick stop if you are in the Vieux de Lyon. Although the historic theatre itself is currently closed for renovation (due to open again in early 2015), it's still... read more

Good for young children (who speak French) - alternatively, there are plays for adults, but again, you would need to speak French. At the ticket counter, they will tell you that you don't need to speak the language for the children's shows, but wouldn't recommend.

It did help for me to have some french background to catch a few key words and relay that to my spouse. If you don't have that, ask the guy selling tickets to give you a short plot summary. The rest is pretty easy to understand. The stage is elevated so all the seats are good for the kids. This... More

Visiting the Theatre du Guignol (pronounced gueen-yoh) in Lyon was an experience. the production was remarkable, although it was presented entirely in French and we understood about 1% of what was being said. However, the way the productions unfolded it was fairly easy to comprehend what was going on. The theatre is intimate and, honestly, it was worth it. I... More

This is a great quick stop if you are in the Vieux de Lyon. Although the historic theatre itself is currently closed for renovation (due to open again in early 2015), it's still worth ducking in to see the front room full of the handcrafted puppets that have graced the public stage with Guinol since the early 1800's-- just after... I visit there with my friend who is working there as a Guignol master. He showed me the back of stage. There are so many different type of Guignol such as Santa, King, Sushi shef, and so on. their clothes were delicately made with sewing machine. The face is also very unique. I had no time to see the show... More

If you don't have French speaking children, I do not think this would be appropriate. It was great for our 5 kids as they grew up in Lyon.

Closed. We asked for guignol shows but found them closed. Other theaters un town are open. This place sounded fun but seems closed for long.

We spent a sunday afternoon at Theatre du Guignol de Lyon. The kids really enjoyed the 1 hour show and we got to go back stage to see all the puppets after the show. We bought tickets in Old Town the morning of the show, at one of the Guignol stores. We showed up 30 minutes early and got good... More

Tickets can be booked in advance either directly or through Fnac. Would recommend getting there 15 minutes before start of show to get good seats. Don't sit too close to stage or difficult for kids to see everything on stage. Recommend 5-9th rows. Great little theatre.

You may not enjoy this is you don't speak French, although it is good if you are learning as it is in basic language (for Kids) and has repetition. Our daughter (8) is basic in French but enjoyed it as it is interactive and you only need a few words to be able to participate. In Old Lyon not far... More
