About
The museum of Fine Arts of Lyon is the largest French museum outside of Paris, in terms of the richness of its collections, and the importance of the bequests received at its creation, in the wake of the Revolution. The ongoing enrichment of the collection and its dynamic artistic program place the museum on the international art scene. The museum is located place des Terreaux, in the heart of the city center, in a former 17th century Benedictine abbey. Its cloister is now home to a quiet garden featuring sculptures by Rodin and Bourdelle, among others. The museum’s encyclopedic collections are exhibited in five sections and seventy galleries presenting artworks from all the major civilizations and artistic schools, from Antiquity to the present day. All year long, the museum offers its visitors an exceptional tour of 5 000 years of art history and organizes major temporary exhibitions, as well as cultural activities engaging all audiences.

- Ewa SBaltinglass, Ireland1,121 contributionsFor art loversFor a place that wants to attract foreign visitors, there should be descriptions and signs in English too, not in French only. I loved the vast collection of artifacts and objects from ancient Egypt, Crete and from Middle Ages. As to paintings - lots of biblical and Christian oriented art. No showstoppers. Still - I enjoyed my visit and spent almost 2 hours there.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 18 September 2023
- Peter JLondon, United Kingdom278 contributionsVery goodThis a very good gallery situated in a lovely building and setting in the centre of Lyon. There is a lot to see here and some preparation will enable you to make the most of your visit. In short, there is almost too much too see in one visit. We focused on the modern paintings section which are very good but that is not to say, depending on personal taste, other galleries are not as good. Recommended.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2023
- Marshall BFerney-Voltaire, France4,562 contributionsSo many wonderful items to see, you really have to take the time to enjoy themWe got to the museum rather late in the day and had only 90 minutes before closing, and they close promptly so it is hard to squeeze in very much in the final 10 minutes. Ninety minutes is not enough, simply put. If you are into antiquities - particularly Egyptian, Greek, and Roman - it would be hard to come away without being immensely impressed by the breadth and depth of those collections, as well as by their condition and presentation. And I have to admit that I spent over 45 minutes just in that part of the museum, and it was much too fast. Also, for people interested in coins, there is an entire room devoted to coins, so that could easily take up another 30 minutes. So, once you get to the more modern art, you need another hour or two just to do it justice. Overall, very impressive presentation of all the works, in good light and not at all crowded together. It is truly the kind of museum that one wants to go back to, more than once, and certainly for much longer than 90 minutes. Excellent brochures available and great bookstore.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 December 2023
- Philip CYork, Maine576 contributionsSuperb MuseumFortunately, we had a few days in Lyon is this museum might not have made our itinerary given all the other top things to do in town. But we were able to adjust our schedule, arrive at the open, take a break for lunch, and return for more. This is not a 2 hour walkthrough but rather a solid half a day.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 January 2024
- shekchilly09Dubai, United Arab Emirates108 contributionsLot to look and admireBuy tickets online and they offer timed slots for reduced waiting. We did not see a lot of crowd that day and it was also raining a bit. The staff was quite helpful and informative. they offer an audio guide option. You can go for a guided tour for a time slot but it is in French usually. The place is divided into sections like Greek, Egyptian, modern art , etc. Elevators are available, for wheelchair or senior citizens but you will encounter steps occasionally. each artwork has a story of its own, so it depends on how long you want to admire the works.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 April 2024
- jeffreyshapiroBozeman, Montana1,853 contributionsNot to missThis museum holds some of the most well known masters painting & sculptors works. The grounds are beautiful with the Spring flowers reaching for the Spring sun. Even the outside lockers were artificially designed! We enjoyed watching a class of youngsters with their teacher and some parent chaperones. The teachers had a captive audience. I loved that youngsters were being given the opportunity to learn about art in multiple forms at such a tender age. Rodin’s works from the very early 1900’s. The dramatic paintings and sculptures of a time gone by, though not forgotten. Each room held enough eye appealing works to hold our interest.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024
- rich sCincinnati, Ohio13 contributionsA true find for art lovers: old, young and even those who are about to become art lovers!A most impressive collection of art: painting, sculptures, artifacts! It's a true find in Lyon! The statue outside of the museum was created by the same sculptor, Frédéric Bartholdi, who created the Statue of Liberty. The plaza is large and lively, pedestrians and bicyclists aplenty!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 June 2024

Lots to see over multiple floors in a beautiful old building, with very friendly and helpful staff. From the anatomically accurate sculptures to the gaudy religious artwork to (finally) the real art pieces such as the beautiful Monet's. Worth the €8 entry.

A wonderful building, located in a beautiful area of the city. Many great sights around. Interestingly the building originally was a Benedictine convent! The stunning artworks include many masterpieces of great artists, as well as sculptures and other artifacts from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Middle East and elsewhere. This is a must visit sight.

My boyfriend and I were extremely disappointed. We had hoped to visit this museum during our trip to Lyon.
Firstly, the website was very difficult to use when booking tickets, not customer friendly at all .
It did not state that tickets were non exchangeable or non refundable. When i emailed them requesting to switch our tour time to a different time on the same day they were completely inflexible, apathetic and unhelpful to our situation.
Would not recommend. There are plenty of other places to visit and things to do in Lyon.

I visited the museum by myself in October 2021. Was amazed that at times probably due to COVID, I had the place to myself. I really enjoyed the collection and had many of the big names you would expect from a top tier museum. Signage throughout was good and it was not too much to take on in a couple hours to get a good feel for the collection.

We started on the 3d floor and worked out way down. We bought audio guides for 1 euro. Usually, there were only 1 or 2 worked in each room with an audio description. The museum map would have been useful if it had not been printed in tiny type of the kind you would find in the legal description on the back of a contract. . The English was light gray on white paper. It was almost completely unreadable. We spent about 2 hours and our feet could not take any more.

Excellent art gallery and museum. Amazing collection from Monet, Pissarro, Manet, Gaugin and other masters together with ancient Egyptian and Roman artefacts. Well worth a visit and children under 18 free.

We were disappointed in the Lyon Art Museum. The collection certainly is large, but we did not find much of the highest quality. Caveat: this is the opinion of a regular art museum visited, but certainly not a qualified critic.

This beautiful museum houses the largest collection of art in France outside the Louvre and is well worth a visit. Sadly the staff were unhelpful but don't let that put you off. It has some wonderful impressionist pictures amongst many other treasures.

Free to the gardens, but £8 for the collections (£4 for people aged 18-25)

Many apologies - I didn’t see this question had come through. Thanks to the others who helped...as far as I can remember, the charge was 12 euros each - good to know about the city pass for next time. Thanks Whitehall!
