Diving into the history of Lyon
A very informative and well organised museum!! It tells the story of Lyon city along with the Roman-French history!! Worth the visit especially with little children!! It is an interactive museum that promotes experience learning!! The only disadvantage is that children activities are only in French… they could have done English translation for the foreign visitors…

Great history explained well in the air conditioned museum
Looking around Roman remains in the extreme heat of early september may not be top of most peoples agenda (but you have to do it). It was surprising how much of the main theatre was available but there had been renovation work. Although the theatres are out in the sun with no shade, the large museum is a welcome air conditioned building. There is a lot of Roman remains as well as the history of Lyon to read about inside. Its an interesting tourist point to visit.

Excellent museum on Roman history in Lyon
Terrific museum with extensive material on Roman history in the Lyon area. Exhibits are well-presented and clearly explained. The museum itself has an interesting architecture with two large windows looking out on the nearby Roman theatre.

Lovely museum, a must-see in Lyon
A not-to-be-missed museum in Lyon, even with kids. the outside has the Amphitheatre of course, but the inside is equally remarkable, with exhibits also explained in English. Keep at least an hour. From here, it's a short walk (downhill) to the funicular station that takes you back to Vieux Lyon or St Jean church (both a stop away). For those mildly interested in seeing the sights or burdened by demanding children, it's best to follow this itinerary: Take a funicular Vieux Lyon to Fourniere. See the church at Fourniere (there's a viewing area outside the church where you can get a glimpse of Lyon city). Walk down the road which shows a "parking" sign to come to this museum. The museum has it's entrance at a higher level. After seeing the inside, you can get access directly to the amphitheater area and exit by a gate on the lower grounds.

We loved this Lugdunum museum, housing many amazing items including sculptures, mosaics and the so called ‘table’ of Claudius, being a bronze transcription of his speech when visiting. A unique item. Worth buying the excellent guide afterwards. There are even wall painting frescoes, lots of pottery, glass and jewellery.

There are many superb archaeological museums throughout France. This museum and these ruins has to be the best (OK, there could be a temple like Nimes). Of course, we haven't visited Vienne yet but that's where the Gaul administrative center of the Roman Empire moved AFTER Lugdunum which was the second largest city after Rome with 40,000 inhabitants. Who knew? The museum is cleverly crafted into the hill and has many outstanding and unique artifacts. Not to be missed!

My husband wanted to see this museum, while I have little interest in ancient history. It was well worth the visit to see the amphitheater and the museum. Excellent self guided audio tour and the design of the museum itself would interest those who like architecture (me!)

Both the museum and the amphitheaters are worth a visit. The museum is built quite organically and ingeniously into the wall, allowing great views onto the the theaters - and the reverse is true as well. The collection is thoughtfully arranged and described; audio guides are available for those who want extra information; good kid activities are sprinkled throughout. We found the museum itself to be quite hot (even in April!); I hope they turn a/c on in the summer. The amphiteaters are great as well, though obviously largely restored.

This is an amazing exhibition, laid out in chronological order. The design is very clever, being a wide, soft gradient spiral ramp, thus facilitating those with mobility problems. Very large windows are set in the walls, giving a view on to the theatre.
At intervals, there are spaces for childrens' interactive work.
For those over 65, entry is free.

This is a surprisingly well-designed and well laid out msueum built into the hill. It looks a bit grey but it is spacious and all the exhibits are clearly marked in both French and English. There are plenty of seating opportunities throughout. There are a couple of big windows where you can look out over the impressive remains of the amphitheatre. In addition, there are occasional videos to illustrate some aspects of the exhibition. It is not expensive and there are activities to keep the children entertained. It lacks a small cafe.
