- Ali921Edinburgh, United Kingdom1,479 contributionsThe views are unbeatable.I don't think I need to tell you why to go. Allow a whole morning or afternoon. It is surprising how long it takes to get up there and there is a lot to do once at the top. During our visit there was approx one hour wait to get a photo in the glass box/floor. If that is important then you might need the whole day up there. The views are unbeatable.Hello, The entire Compagnie du Mont-Blanc team would like to thank you for sharing your experience. - wendyanddavid536Solihull, United Kingdom2,123 contributionsUnbelievable! Absolutely Stunning! Two cable cars and a lift take you up from Chamonix at 1012m above sea level to the top of the Aiguille du Midi, a pinnacle of rock at 3842m above sea level. The views are absolutely amazing over the Mont Blanc range. We were lucky that it was a cloudless day allowing spectacular 360 degree viewing. The real challenge was standing on a glass floor viewing Chamonix 2830m (nearly 9300 feet vertically below!) A splendid day out, and do go to the immersive cinema at the bottom; that is also excellent. For 12 minutes you feel like you are flying across the mountains!Hello, The entire Compagnie du Mont-Blanc team would like to thank you for sharing your experience. - marcy sVancouver, Canada657 contributionsNon stop views everywhereNon stop views everytime you turn around. Go on a sunny day. The website makes a big deal about booking a specific departure time, but we ended up on the car ahead of us with no problems. There are some hiking options from the mid station, a mountain cafe and basic facilities. There's a direct tunnel from the disembarkation gate of the first gondola to the entrance of the second gondola. This one is faster and much steeper than the first. We missed the gondola to Italy, it stopped running last week, but there is still plenty to see anyway. The line for the glass box can get really long, and time consuming. Be very sure you want that picture. Or just go up the elevator, take pictures all around up top and still be amazed. It is very cold at the top, take layers, even gloves. There are plenty of places to sit if you want to take a bag lunch. Definitely cheaper than buying lunch at the top. You have to go through the gift shop to reach the toilets or the gondola down.Hello, The entire Compagnie du Mont-Blanc team would like to thank you for sharing your experience. A glass box with glass floor to stand in means there’s nothing but a few feet of glass between you and 1000’s of feet drop !!!!! It’s hilarious watching people scared to walk onto the glass floor 🤣. You can even eat in the restaurant or shop in a gift shop at the top of this mountain. - パパパTokyo, Japan43 contributionsExpensive, but beautifulThe price of the ropeway was 75 euros for a round trip to the Aiguille des Yeux-Midi alone. Even if you have a Swiss Halfway Card, no discount is applied due to the fact that it is a French territory. The ropeway is basically available only by advance reservation, and although tickets are sold on the day of the tour, you will only receive a ticket for the time when the ropeway is not fully booked in advance. The ticket office was open at 5:50 am, 20 minutes before the ropeway's first departure time, though, The only ticket I was able to get was for the 8:50 a.m. ride. However, we waited at the entrance to the ropeway at the ticket counter, and if the lift was not full, we could get on the lift when it was available, I waited at the entrance of the ropeway and was lucky enough to get on the first lift at 6:10 a.m. The temperature at the entrance of the ropeway and the observatory is different by about 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, and the temperature at the observatory is below freezing, You need to wear clothes that can be adjusted by layering. We were the first to reach the observation deck and it took only a little over 30 minutes because there were only a few people there. We could have gone straight home, but the weather was good, so we went to El Bronne (Italy). Because of the possibility of bad weather, we bought a round-trip ticket for 38 euros at the gondola stop from Aiguille des Jeux Midi to El Bronne on the same day. We stood in line after 7:10 a.m., waited 25 minutes for the ride, rode the gondola for 20 minutes, visited for about 25 minutes, and the return gondola ride took 30 minutes. The gondola stops often, so it takes time, but I felt that the view from inside the gondola was different from the view from the observation deck. It was after 9:00 a.m. when we returned, but at 9:00 a.m., there were many people boarding the lifts and buying tickets on the day of our visit, Needless to say, it is better to ride the lifts as early in the morning as possible. The price was 113 euros for both lifts, which I don't think is low price, and I had a hard time buying the ticket, but I was blown away by the wonderful scenery. It is better to buy tickets in advance, but if the weather forecast predicts bad weather, it will be a waste of money, I think it is very difficult to make a decision.Hello from Chamonix ! - Diana HBucharest, Romania294 contributionsBest thing to do in ChamonixIf there is a must to do in Chamonix it is taking the cable car to the Aguille du Midi. Spectacular views of the Alps and if you're lucky you can also see Mont Blanc (if it's not cloudy). After you manage to get to the second point you will need to wait 2h until you can descend, so if you are on a tight schedule keep this in mind. You can get coffee as there is a restaurant and cafeteria. The altitude is high so be mindful that the air is very thin, if you have lung problems or asthma you need to see if you can take it. It can get pretty windy so you need to dress accordingly, as it can get very cold up there.Hello from Chamonix ! - Thebates22Chester, United Kingdom2,080 contributionsFree half a day up in your Chamonix itinerary to do this as it’s well worth it.As a mountaineer I wanted my wife to experience some high altitude so we decided to go up to the Aiguille du Midi early October -23. Going from the valley to 3,842m in such s short time you will certainly feel the effects of altitude (short OPF breath / slight dizziness) if you are not acclimatised. This is as high / close as you can get in the Mont Blanc massif within the French Alps to Mount Blanc. We (my wife) had truly magical experience with great views and light winds. €75 pp if booked on the day in the ticket office, €55 pp if you pre book online in advance. It is definitely one of, or maybe the place to visit while in Chamonix. After all what you can see from the top is just amazing. There is a queue as expected so make sure you book in advance. You can probably go on a same day when you buy the ticket if you want to make sure the weather is great, but get ready to book the whole day since the time between buying the ticket and actually going up could be many hours. So, the views are great that's the good thing. The process of getting the ticket is very poorly organized so again, make sure you book in advance. On a busy Sunday when we took the journey, there was only one(!) person giving the boarding times for the people who had purchased their tickets online. So you can imagine the queues... And the one thing that was kind of annoying is the fact that they don't pay any respect towards the ongoing Covid-19 situation. Yes there are signs to wear mask and wash your hands, but the lifts are stuffed completely full with people with no safety distances in ques or inside lifts. I think everyone would understand reduced capacity at the moment.. In fact spending few days in Chamonix I noticed the locals don't care about the Covid either. Everyone acts like they haven't heard about safety distances, coughing towards you without masks etc. Typical French impoliteness. No wonder the country did so bad with the virus.. So if you decide to go to Aiguille du Midi, that's well worth the money but go when the Covid-19 is over if you want to play it safe.

Hello and thank you for your remark.
Following your request on Covid-19 measures :
We apply the same regulations as the Public Transport Services
- Wearing a mask is compulsory but no distancing in transport is to respect
We choose not to fully fill our trains in the upward direction
- On the other hand, and depending on the number of people, some trains may go down with maximum capacity
Best regards.

The cable cars up to Aguille du Midi were rammed, shoulder to shoulder, but since new law on 20th July, everyone had masks on in the cable cars/gondolas/buildings.
We also thought the price was extortionate- €201 for family, then another €99 for the gondola across to Italy.
But we risked the crowd 😷, blew the cash... and it is amazing up there.
The mid stage up the mountain has a bar/cafe, and trails leading out across, or up/down.
The top has a couple of exhibitions, another cafe, a busy glass box, the gondola across to Italy, and fantastic views.

We had a wonderful morning taking the cable car(s) up the mountain. The ride is mostly to get you from Chamonix to the mountain top so it is okay if you can’t see out of the cable car very well. Once you arrive at the top station the views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding area are amazing. Lots of good spots for photo ops. It was fun to watch the hikers ascending/descending the slopes below and above. One tip: Be sure to validate a reservation for a specific time slot. I thought that I had done that but after selecting the time slot I chose to purchase the one day multi pass. That includes the price of the aguille du midi but not a specific timeslot. The timeslot I had selected did not “stick” when I bought the multi pass so just be sure it validates and you have confirmation of a specific time. We were fortunate that we showed up early and the woman at the ticket office was very nice and helped us get a timeslot. We also recommend getting off at the halfway point on the way down to enjoy a beverage and snack on the terrace of the snack bar if it is a nice day. You can also do some easy hiking in that area if you want to take a small walk on the mountain. Also, we went in July during a heat wave and we did not need to dress very warmly for the visit. A light jacket was plenty. We actually wished we had shorts for our stop at the halfway point.

Great experience and the mountain is beautiful. Once and lifetime thing to do. However the amount of people pushed into a bubble was uncomfortable and I didn't feel safe. I think they need to re think the amount of people they 'push' into the bubble. The cost is rather high for views but it is what it is. Chamonix prices for us tourists.

Beautiful, very christmasy, stunning mountain views, very central, lovely shops, most ski lifts were closed for most of the week we went, due to high winds but we managed to get up the aguilla du midi the one day it was open, waited over an hour in -12 degrees for a photo in the glass box!
Not worth the wait. The tramway du montblance cost over £100 return from Bellevue Inc. the ski lift, and we couldn't see a thing out the windows due to iced up windows, we didnt get the return but got off in la fayet and got a regular train back as we were freezing, the train was much nicer with better scenery. We couldn't afford to eat well in chamonix due to high prices, a toblerone was £15 !!!
We lived on toast all week. Which was a shame as it was Christmas week. The buses were free but crammed full of skiers with all their equipment, unable to move, wearing cold weather clothing most people were melting, not a pleasant experience when the journey was half an hour each way. The prettiest ski area we went to was le tour/la vormaine with free ski practise areas for beginners. overall lovely if you have lots of money to spend and hire a car.

The skiing at chamonix is out with my comfort zone, however I was determined as we were there to see Mont Blanc close up! I am quite scared of unstable heights but thought it would be ok, thankfully my teenage daughter was amazing, as on the second part gondola, it suddenly braked, swang for 5 minutes (felt like an hour!) and then moved on. This did shake myself and friend up a bit, once we got up, its then slowly chugs up the face of the mountain....the views and the set up are incredible and worth it. If you don't have a ski pass the prices are a bit steep but once up you do understand why in the upkeep and safety costs. The route back down seemed much quicker and uneventful....would definately recommend to do at least once in your life!

We purchased our tickets the same day for a few hours later due to the number of people interested in taking the cable car. We opted for the Aiguille Midi option which was two cable cars, one right after the other.
The cars can hold about 60 people and move quickly up the mountain. The views are spectacular from the cable cars but from the top, they are astounding.
There are multiple places and levels to view the splendor of the mountains, the glacier, and the valley.
We didn't hike, rock climb or ice climb and truly enjoyed the experience.
Once you are at the top, you are given a number for the return car. It's about 90 minutes after you arrive which seems like a long time but with the multiple viewing places and the way the clouds can change what you see, there's a lot to see.
We didn't dine in the cafeteria or the restaurant.
We got a few souvenirs in the gift shop at the top but there is a bigger, nicer one at the bottom when you are back on the valley floor.
This was definitely a highlight of our trip.

Wow! Expensive experience, but worth it. Be aware if you want to go on the cable cars into Italy it’s a good 1 hour round trip, (so book a morning slot if you can) they recommended 2-3 hours. We didn’t do this as not enough time. It was very busy when we went and so they give you a time a lot to return to Chamonix. We went up at 12.40pm and had to return at 2.50pm, but they were running behind,, so lots of waiting for available cable car, which was a bit frustrating as stuck inside building unable to see all the views for about 30 minutes. Probably left Aiguille du midi at about 3.20pm. Cafe and restaurant up there and the most fantastic views (obviously). We took jumpers and wore trousers, but it wasn’t too cold the day we went up. 60 min queue to go to the void (step into glass box above open space), there is a sign which tells you how long you have to wait. So we decided not to queue for an hour (inside). We did have lunch up there in the cafe which was good with lots of choice. Also going up in the summer was really good as you could see rock climbers and experienced hikers going up and down the Valley Blanche. I’ve been up here a few times now and it’s really developed with new parts and viewing points being added, would have liked to stay up here longer to explore the exhibition and watch the film too. But we basically ran out of time. If I was to go again I’d def want to do the cable cars to Italy (this costs extra making the whole experience about £300+ for one day! Which is a lot… so you need to plan your day and start early if possible (again all weather dependant) our first booking was cancelled due to high winds, so check website regularly and your emails.
All in all an amazing ‘top of the world’ feeling, took out two children ages 12 and 14 and they were old enough to appreciate the experience too.

Hello,
The entire Compagnie du Mont-Blanc team would like to thank you for sharing your experience !
To get to Italy is better to start the day early so that you have enough time to visit the Italian side.
The waiting time for the return journey may be longer in the event of heavy traffic. This waiting time is specified on our website, depending on how busy the site is that day.
We hope to see you again on your next visit to Chamonix!

A truly unforgettable experience, breathtaking from every angle. Just a shame there is a ‘but’ to my experience.
The good - As some one whom is not the best with heights I was a little apprehensive, but once at the top, the views soon made all that fade away, a true wonder of engineering to be there in the first place, then mother nature takes over and ramps up the spectacle beyond any thing you have likely seen before. There are several levels and platforms to take in the various aspects, they do require some effort to climbs steps and at that altitude you do have to walk much slower. I am a fit person in my 40’s but even I needed to stop and acclimatise at points. The gondola/cable cars are relatively smooth, and it doesn’t take long to reach the top.
The bad - despite several emails from the organisers stating covid masks were compulsory in the carriages, I estimated 95% of people didn’t have one on nor were they advised to do so by staff.
The biggest issue for me though was a member of staff making me a laughing stock in front of hundreds of people. I had printed my ticket (with a QR code) from an email, as advised by the organisers this would give me access to all attractions. What was not obvious was that I needed to use this at the site to print out a second ticket/card for the cable. Despite clearing one security check with the printed email, When I approached the second check point I was insulted by the Attendant whom said I needed a different pass, when I politely asked where I needed to do this he turned to approx 100 people in the queue and in French (not my native language and he knew that) made a joke. They all laughed which didn’t make me feel great at all. I asked politely once again if he could point where I needed to go. He then made a very dramatic point of walking me to the machine, as if I was 5yrs old. I don’t expect to be insulted when I am polite and when I have spent a LOT of money on a tourist attraction. How I kept calm is beyond me, if I could speak French well enough I would of made sure he wouldn’t do that again!

The trip up the Aiguille du Midi was the highlight of our holiday. It was a glorious day and although there were a lot of people wanting to go up, you are given a time slot to go up and a time slot to come down, it’s very well organised. The views at the top of Mont Blanc are breathtaking. Literally breathtaking because oxygen levels at that height are reduced to 65%. Me and my boyfriend both felt the effects because of the reduced oxygen but we felt it was worth it. There’s plenty time to take photos at the top before you descend. The only thing we were disappointed with was the queue time for the glass bottomed plinth. We couldn’t wait for that as it would mean we’d miss our slot for descent, but we will do that on another trip.
On the way down we had lunch at the cafe with the most stunning views. We purchased this as part of the cable car package so it wasn’t too expensive. Our ticket also included the 4D cinema at the bottom which was really good too. My advice is to go when the weather is good and you won’t be disappointed.

Muchas gracias.

Can you take small roller bags/luggage on the cable car? We are looking at using this and the Mt Bianco Skyway to transfer between Chamonix and Courmayeur.

It is our dream to see Mont Blanc. We wanted last year in December, but it was closed, so we did not bought the flight tickets. Now we could visit Chamonix and Mont Blanc from 27 until 30 of October 2024. It will be open? I see that last year the closing was in 7 of Nov, in 2022 in 5 nov so maybe we will have super luck. If anybody can help us with an answer, it will make us happy. Looking for flight tickets.... Thank you!!

I assume you mean by using AIGUILLE DU MIDI cable car ? Although it might be timetabled to be open it can close with short notice due to weather and high winds. Much better to visit in the summer but it will be a lot busier.

We want to visit Aiguille du Midi, the earliest bus that is available to us arrives near the lift at 7:40 and I see that the only closest available reservation time is 7:40. Even if the bus will arrive precisely we still need time to get to the lift, so we will be late. The bus could arrive even later, so the question is will we be able to ride on the lift if we are 10 minutes late for example? Or we will be denied boarding?

I wouldn’t attempt it. Later in the day there will be some delay, but that early probably not. I have read they are pretty adamant about spots and if you lose your spot, not sure you could ride the cable car after. Maybe you can call them and see if they would have a 10 minute window flexibility.? Enjoy your visit
