Enjoy history and glaciology

It takes about twenty minutes to climb the 1,000 metres up to the Montenvers-Mer de Glace attraction. Simply hop on board the famous little red railway train. Time will stand still, and you’ll enjoy this vintage method of transport. The track climbs the mountainside, running through the forest, tunnels cut through the rock and over viaducts. You enter the realm of the high mountains, and round the last bend you’ll feel the magic: you’ve arrived at your destination at the foot of the famous Mer de Glace glacier, at an altitude of 1,913m. A stunning panorama opens out before you, with the glacier below, an excellent testament to the climate change in this day and age.

As scary as the train ride up the mountain is, it is well worth it for the stunning views on the way up. Journey time is approx 20 minutes. Sadly the ice caves were temporarily shut during the month of May so I cannot comment on that. Views once you are up there are worth the scary train ride though... More

A really nice train ride up to the glacier. Amazing engineering gives this train great views as it climbs to the top. If the cable cars are running go down to the glacier, if not just admire the scenery.

Too little cave for all the effort to come here, bad weather makes it a rather disappointing visit. While the ice cave concept is nice, the 400 plus steps up and down to the caves needs to be justified with some more depth of cave to be cut in to the ice.

Loverly little train up to the glacier. You can then do into the ice tunnel if you wish or just take in the views. The Mer du Glace is better seen in winter when snow cover is better.

Skip it if the ice cave is closed. A lot of tour groups do this. Would only do it again if I had nothing else to do. We used the combo ticket so it was fairly cheap. Not worth the 31 euros per person.

We experienced the train on the way down after skiing the Vallée Blanche & Mer de Glace. But the scenery is amazing! This is a great option for getting up to the glacier from Chamonix & experiencing the views of the high alpine.

This is a great experience and the glacier is a facinating way of understnading global warming and the horrific rate the glacier is receeding.

Me and my partner really enjoyed the experience of Mer de Glace especially getting there by the tram riding through the mountains. Have to marvel at the skill and time it took to carve through the ice to make this attraction and see the history of the glaciers change throughout the years.

We take the train from station in Chamonix and continue taking cable car to see the glacier and ice cave. To see glacier closer, we need to walk down the stairs more than 300 steps. Finally you can see the ice cave. Worth going there. This walking (walk down and walk up) is not suitable for people having legs problem,... More

I've lived here and taken this train every year several times. It's a beautiful train journey. The views from the train station are astounding. For those who expect Disney land type entertainment, go elsewhere. This is not Disney land. But you can go into the glacier. Each year the ice cave is recreated (the glacier moves a lot yearly) and... More
