The whole site is divided into three parts: the historical section (not much to see); modern contemporary art exhibition; and oceanography. The last two just seem out of place in this location. Anyway come for the view.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 20 September 2023
- Remmi ALiverpool, United Kingdom4 contributionsStunningI don't get how this has only got 3.5 stars, we almost didn't go here but I'm so glad we did. I love castles and this one is amazing. I went with my girlfriend on a stunning Saturday morning in December and we had the place to ourselves. The exhibits are interesting (although mostly in French with only a few translations) and the view from various points in the grounds and the castle are some of the best in Annecy. And for the price of about 5CHF each it was 100% worth it, and probably the best value for money thing we did on our entire trip.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 December 2023
- permia64,715 contributionsFabulous bastion beautifully restoredDominating a high point in the town since about the 13th century, it is a treasured part of the area’s heritage and history. In a commanding position, it has had an eclectic history, including suffering fires and becoming abandoned in the 16th century. But all changed for the better in 1953 when it became part of the town’s acquisitions. After remedial works the current brilliant museum was set up and launched.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 January 2024

When we visited the special exhibition was about the mini ice age. There are many interesting things in this museum as you wander from floor to floor. Lovely 200 year old paintings of Annecy, old furniture and glory boxes(??) and even some modern art. Entry was 5.50 Euros and the visit takes between 1 and 1.5 hours.

To go here you will need to have car to drive through.
It is definitely worthy trip to have.
The chateau itself is quite small and it has a lot of history inside.
But the thing that made this place very impressive is actually the view of the lake and nature from this place.
It is just impressive !!!

We were so fortunate to catch an exhibit of artifacts found in the Alps when the snow started melting as a result of the climate change. It included several pairs of shoes, some as old as 5000! and in good shape, some skeletons of the people perished while crossing the Alps and the items belonging to them. Even the famous Otzi was on display! This exhibit was really 5+, but even without the exhibit, the castle is well worth visiting.
The views from up there were stupendous!.
The castle itself was also cool and the permanent exhibitions had some interesting pieces. There was even one painting by Bruegel (and as a Bruegel fan, I'll climb every mountain to see his work).
The modern art exhibit was wacky (as modern art often is), but ok to have a quick look.
All in all, we had a great visit.

The building is lovely but beware if you arrive at or near lunchtime. We paid for the museum and were asked to leave after 10 minutes. They closed the door behind us. They did tell us we could come back on the same ticket but really ? Unless you are really interested in some mid-range artefacts , I would give this a miss. However, the observatory on the lake is worth seeing. Got here (in the same complex) and avoid the museum.

Parking on premises possible although it is worth to walk all the way up from the old town. Fair entrance fee and no cost for kids. Nice collections and set up, good tout through the castle and cool activities for kids, my 7&5 year olds never got bored. Nice views from several points inside and outside of the building.

To be honest I'd rather we just spent more hours gazing out over the lake from the park. A hodgepodge of exhibits, no English translations, some pretty bad contemporary art. Exhibition by Ushev is quite interesting although not our taste.

We were quite disappointed with this castle visit. From the outside it looks fine, big, imposing and threatening (as many castles do).
Inside, compared to the castles in Normandy and Brittany, it looks miserable.

I had some expectations of the Chateau. So visible in the city. Everything else in Annecy was wonderful. What I got was being asked to give my small backpack over at the desk for security , while 9 others entering at the same time were not.
A strange place with things that ask the question why bother?
i was told a few times that no photos are allowed despite not having my camera with me, but there was nothing worth photographing anyway. Staff were good at giving orders to visitors.
Even the view over the city was only partial. The most boring part of my time in Annecy which is otherwise worth a visit.
Save your 4.9 € and go somewhere else.

Given that I am not interested in the exhibits, is there a view of the town from the outside of the castle or does one still have to pay admission for the view from inside?
