- Deepaktulsyan15 contributionsVisit to Vieux port at MarseilleLa Vieux port is the central place at Mersailles. Tourist should visit here all day of their travel....one would find all season food , mix varieties....& also lot of desserts. Boating is a must go from Port to either Chateau d'if or frioul It's approx 11-12 euro per head.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 February 2023
- mmeere6965 contributionsIdeal location to People watchBeautiful port, lovely to sit and watch the world go by. Flower market on Saturday was just beautiful, the scents from the flowers and plants was just amazing. Fresh fish sold in the mornings. The walkway is alive with people and buskers. Be aware of bicycles and electric scooters, they tend to come from nowhere at an awful speed. Wasn't really down there late at night but felt completely safe during the day. to the right you will find the bus stops for local buses and tour buses. To the left there is a lot more bars/restaurants and if you keep walking about 20 mins from the port is a beautiful beachVisited March 2023Written 20 March 2023
- travelbob1New Windsor, New York1,135 contributionsGreat Visit on a Great dayQuite an area to explore. There are shops, a harbor, history and architecture. It is easy to navigate with plenty of sidewalks. Be sure to walk along the roads leading away from the port to view more. There is also a metro stop for those wanting to move further into the city.Visited March 2023Written 1 April 2023
- Maxine & Paul65 contributionsImproved since ‘98!!I must say the port area has improved greatly since i was last there in ‘98 but that was a football trip so we will move on!! Stopped here as a port of call off the cruise and found it an enjoyable couple of hours mooching around. Nice restaurants and bars which were reasonably priced and found the area clean and the people friendly. Nice harbour area and would say it’s worth a visit.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 June 2023

There is a plethora of restaurants all around the port and there is no shortage of people and customers. This is also where Le Bateau (ferry) which takes you to the Frioul Archipelago for 11.10€ each return on a very regular schedule. As a tourist the port is a must visit and Frioul is a definate visit for its historic and biodiversity interest.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 July 2023

A nice busy port, with nice coffee places around. In some days there is a market place with fishermen and fish. You can take the ferry to the island near the city, which is beautiful.

Everyone said to me prior to our visit to Marseille this weekend for the rugby World Cup quarters that the old port was rough
We thought it was pretty good!
Some of restaurants a bit tourist trappy but some interesting old parts and the fish market first thing is cool

The Dystopian Nomad and friends visited the Vieux Port quite a lot during our stay. It is a nice area to take a very early morning stroll, scents from the sea wafting in the air, and seagulls flying about. We have also had the chance to eat in several restaurants around this area, and the food was surprisingly good, especially at the queen victoria. The are a lot of bars, restaurants and cafes that line the entire two flanks of the port. We had memorable times during sundown at some bars that face the notre dame de la garde. The crowd is mostly tourists, though some locals were around as well.
The vieux port also has a nice view that opens towards the sea, and upwards to the notre dame de la garde.
On the negative side, the area can be a tad bit risky for someone who doesn't understand the dynamics of manoeuvring within a big city . Drunken brawls generally erupted around this place, and there was a chilling absence of police, uniformed or otherwise. But then again, there was a group of cops who I understand are known as bac, we saw them intervening in a situation and yes they are super effective. But of course with a large number of bars, brawls are to be expected. Similarly there's a large number of pickpockets on the prowl, and young maghrebi youths looking to cause trouble, but then again this is the same in all big cities in france.
Conclusion, the vieux, port is a nice place. One only has to practise active situational awareness, avoid getting too drunk when alone, and it is a safe place.

Beautiful and pulsating city. A bit worn down city but nice to see the fishermen and the cosy atmosphere around the harbor.

We stayed in AirBnB apartment on Rue de la Paix Marcel which is right at the Vieux Port. Thanks to Tripadvisor forum’s travellers who advised us to stay at the old port area. It is so picturesque at any time of the day: with the fishermen selling fresh fish in the morning, boats hustling during the day or the sun setting in the evening with its surreal colours. Make sure you see the awesome mirror roof! There are plenty of cafes and restaurants around and lots of young and old in the bars. It’s a very atmospheric place.

2 jours a Marseille suffirat.

We have a few hours in Marseille, we fly into the main airport and then need to train to Cassis. Is it possible to see the old port in 2-3 hours while I transit?

If you get a taxi to and from, yes you cold spend an hour or so here. Well worth it, if you don't mind rushing.
