Point rouge beach is right next to the main road and close to the boat disembarkation point as well. It appears to be equally popular with the tourists as well as the locals and has changing/bathing facilities right on the beach with some restaurants and shops to boot. On one occasion the lifeguards would not allow anyone in the water citing reasons of pollution (health hazard) for about a few hours which everyone found quite strange but apart from that it's a nice sandy beach with a shallow lagoon great for a swim in calm waters

This was a nice senic tour, when we got droped off by the beach, it would be okay if you want to spend a few hours sun bathing and swimming but other wise there isn't much to do, the resturants along the beach front are great the staff are very welcoming. the city centre isn't too far away, but is a reasonable walk. The beach is very clean and isn't thar crowded.

The first day in Marseille we were at a pebble beach, so we were in search of some sand. We headed here around 11 am, and there was still plenty of room to place our towels down. There were a lot of people, but yet plenty of space. There are some restaurants right on the beach, some showers available, and it is right on the 19 bus line. The water was quite clear, and quite warm also. I would head here again.

I am leaving there, so this is first hand experience.
NEVER leave valuables unattended. If you are solo, get some waterproof gear to carry money & docs.
Pros.
One of the three sandy beaches of Marseilles.
It is particularly kid friendly, as it slopes down very gently.
Amenities available (toilets and showers).
Great place for dining on the beach, whether you bring your stuff or go to one of the restaurants (nothing special in any of them though - you pay for the location). Get a pizza there at sunset and be happy. In season, expect very long waiting time.
In season, go swim before 10.00 am, the water is clear and the crowd is not there.
You can get there with the bus-boat which commutes every 20 min between Vieux Port and Pointe Rouge harbor (5 min away) - it is a great trip: a must do.
You can access it with a wheelchair, but you have to go around. Coming from David, you'll have to turn right when passing the beach (after a traffic light), turn immediately right (there is gas station in from of you), and then right again, where there is a small parking and at its end the access to the beach via a ramp.
Cons: in season (summer & week ends of september and october)
Summer months are a nightmare between 10.00 am and 5.00 PM.
The beach is overcrowded.
Perfect illustration of what "dirty" means (after 5 pm)

nice beach, water around 15 degree in May (but still you can see lots of people swimming).
There is a small bar, please do not order fast food there, everything else is OK (nice cold beer on a sunny day, yummy)

My girlfriend & I wanted a nice beach day & we set out to find a nice, sandy beach & although there are about 6 beaches in a row within walking distance of each other, this one which happened to be at the very end was the best in our opinion.
The sand is the least gritty, the beach is not massive, but not small either.
There are about 5 bars/restaurants, although they were not all open when we were there, so check their opening hours!! This caught us out as we wanted a pizza at about 5.00pm & we couldn't find anywhere to serve us....it was either too early or the bars were closing shortly!!!!!
It was glorious sitting on the sand near the water, listening to the waves crashing & the weather was lovely.

A lonely seaside beach right on the Med. Children and dog friendly. There are several nearby restaurants which offer quality meals. A nice place to go during the warmer weather. Accessible to bus routes. Enjoy!

Nice place, not very crowded, but little too far for who is going on public transport. If you like some place to run at the beach, thats your place!

I have lived in Marseille for 9 years and the "Plage de la Pointe Rouge" has always been a favourite, not only for myself and my wife but also for our children and grandchildren who visit us at least twice a year......
The beach is nothing special...the sand is grainy as on most beaches...but the atmosphere is truly special.
I have a favourite restaurant "Le Lagon Bleu" and each time I go to the beach I always manage to organize a lunch for how many of us there are.....and the proprietor lets us sit at the tables well after lunch has ended just to allow the kids to play in the water.
The beach is under threat however and all the establishments have been served notice by the Marseille local Council that their buildings will be razed to the ground in 2018 and the plan is to level the beach and create "new environment".......
My friend at "Le Lagon Bleu" has been there for 22 years and in 18 months it's over.....VERY SAD.....!!!!!
Please if you find yourself at La Pointe Rouge...for whatever reason, visit Le Lagon Bleu and give the proprietor a "huge" tip and tell him it's from ME...!!!!!
