The Dusty Nomad made a visit to this really beautiful place. The building in itself is a wondrous work of art and eccentric architecture. It is spectacular. Fact that it is a whole complex encompassing fort st jean makes it even more an amazing place to visit.
The exhibitions therein were informative, and entertaining at the same time. They have a small restaurant inside, a library, and quite a lot to see.
However, two very negative points; First, some of the security personnel are just over the top to the point of being aggressive. In this day and age physically searching a guests body is not only illegal, but unwarranted. Grabbing a guests handbag and opening it, then putting a hand inside and rummaging through personal affairs is downright disrespectful not only to the guest but also to the profession of being a security personnel, and the establishment in question.
Second, the restaurant that has a terrasse, on the third floor. We had a drink here and some snacks. While it is well placed, and beautiful, some of the employees are shockingly rude. One even insulted us in french and with a smile, unfortunately we fully understood what was said.
Other than those two remarks, the mucem is a lovely place and worth visiting.

This is a once in a lifetime experience, the mucem has some breath taking exhibits. My children were amazed by the astrology and dinosaur exhibits, jaw dropping!

I spent just one day in Marseille so I didn't visit the museum but I visited the building. Gosh it was absolutely amazing, I think it's one of the most beautiful thing to do in Marseille.
If you are laky enough in a sunny day the experience will be unforgettable.
Honestly speaking, visiting this building wasn't on my list, now I can say that If I hadn't come I would have made a terrible mistake.

Great city, great view. Everyone told me to visit the Mucem. The outdoor area of the fort is free to tour. It just so happened that I was walking the Panier neighborhood and thus walked right to the entrance of the fort, on the elevated pedestrian walkway, only to find a sign that said CLOSED. Why? because it just so happened to be a TUESDAY. Yes, the museum is closed one day a week, on Tuesdays. I am guessing the national labor laws require a day of rest once a week for the museum staff. Fine with me, as from reading the posted reviews, I didn't miss much, and saved 11 Euros of entrance fee, which I spent on a fabulous dish of cous-cous nearby.

The people that work in the shops were very unfriendly and rude. The only helpful person we meet was at a little souvenir shop just outside the cruise terminal. She was very pleasant and helpful. She handmade most of the items at her shop.

I did not visit the museum but only went here to see Fort Saint-Jean. This place is fabulous to see in it's own right but it also gives you spectacular photos as it overlooks the harbour. It's free to enter and is full of cobbled walkways leading to many interesting features around the fort. There's a lot to see here and well worth the visit.

Before we went we couldn't work out what kind of museum this is - art/history? I understand it was built for Marseille's tenure as European City of Culture and it is apparently a museum of Mediterranean culture. I love museums, and this is not a good one. The architecture is gorgeous and its rooftops and juxtaposition to le Fort Saint Jean is all great to visit, highly recommend, but the exhibitions are dull. There's a room about Mediterranean food which is obvious and the displays about cities of the mediterannean is like something out of junior school. I also had a big issue with the English translations, French can be a flowery, overwritten language and the translations, for a world class museum are disappointing, and often difficult to understand - more like transliteration than translation. Why didn't they get a native English speaker to translate?

The museum has a good view outsides but insides there're quite various collections of stuff. Not worth visiting the collections if time is tight.

I don’t understand why there’s so much fuss about this museum? The permanent collection includes a bizarre exhibit on food (with questionable dietary claims) and another exhibit with photographs of other Mediterranean cities. There are very few objects of historical significance. The best part of the Mucem is the old fort, which one can visit for free. I would recommend only visiting the fort and not paying the €11 entrance fee to visit the permanent and temporary exhibits.
If you want to learn about the history of the city and it’s historical role in Mediterranean trade, visit the Musée d’histoire de Marseille: it’s free and it has countless Greek, Roman, and Gaul artifacts! Much better than the Mucem.

Museum, the architecture of the buidling, the combination of old and modern, a rooftop, the passerelle to Fort Saint Jean. Great view over the city, the harbour, the sea and much more. All except the exhibitions for free. You quickly spend a lot of time here without realising it.

Saluti. L.
