We took the route suggested in the tourist map available from the hotel and tourist office and it turned out to provide an excellent way around and through this old part of the city. We came up from the Cathedral and out onto the quay near the bottom of Republic. We walked up narrow streets, some stepped, past classic institutional... More

We had been told that a stroll through this area was as interesting and enjoyable as one through Le Marais in Paris. It was quite pleasant and there are many interesting shops with diverse wares. The only problem was that uneasy feeling of being watched. It would seem that previous visitors have not exaggerated when they talk about the level... More

A visit to this area is a must especially the Vieux Charite. Interesting museums and the building has great charm. A good restaurant is Au Lamparo but very popular Sunday lunchtime.

It's an old neighborhood with tall buildings and narrow streets. There are a lot of lovely little restaurants and shops to look in as well as art galleries and bakeries.

Winding steep streets, little local restos, artisan shops - especially loved the bright ceramics at L'atelier d'Agnes on place des Pistoles with the potter at his wheel in the shop.

The Panier is a nice place to visit by foot even if the place is sometimes bite dirty. The place is a set of old streets and houses. The atmosphere is great, so having a glass and a meal is a good idea. Has it can get crowdy, just jump in a deserted street and enjoy silence and nice architecture.

Im sorry but I just didn't like Marseille at all. I found it unsafe and dirty. The panier was covered in graffiti and rather dull. Not a very nice city I'm afraid!

Second time in Marseille, first time in the picturesque Panier quarter. Located off the "vieux port" the Panier takes you through the old swirling streets of Marseille. By the look of it it is currently being updated for the 2013's City of Culture so there are quite a lot of building sites around. But there are lovely shops to discover... More

If you get the tourist map of Marseille it shows a walking route around the Panier district. There is also a red line on the pavement to show you the way round. Well worth a couple of hours wandering around.
