Le Panier is a lovely quartier of Marseille with real culture and different from the modern museums and new building work. It is worth a visit for its charm and history, with restaurants and bars nearby

If you're in Marseille you must visit this area! So many cute little shops and beautiful little streets. It all feels very French and is very picturesque.

little streets, nestling up and down around the hill, with many small shops, bars, restaurants... Le Panier is Marseille the old way. a pleasant stroll to spend half a day.

You should watch the movie French Connection first to really appreciate the history of this place! You must either read the history beforehand or better take a guided tour- some are free- to indulge yourself in its fantastic history. Good for family or couple or...More

We walked around the neighbourhood as part of the tourist map's recommended paths and really enjoyed exploring the small streets. One thing to note is to NOT come here too early in the morning because the shops won't be opened yet.

Stayed in The Panier, lovely backstreet walking, but close to Veix Port and other areas of interest. Some good arty shops and bars.

Lots of history in this place. It's like a scene from "les miserable". Be prepared to walk. Quaint stores.

You can feel the Marseille spirit here. Walk in the narrow streets. Feel the city and silence at the same moment. Also you you can find small shopping points.

Nice walk, but not for all legs: up and down, stairs, more stairs and when there are none, cars are allowed. Nice squares for an outside sip, and we found a nice "soap bazar"...

Is this a safe place for a woman on her own during the day?

I think visiting alone during the day would be fine. There were some groups of street artists on some of the corners hanging out and playing music. Otherwise you just wander in and out of artistic little stores and galleries. More
