We stopped just down the hill to be able to get a really good look at this spot. We also spent some time walking on some of the paths in the area. People have gone up to the top. There is parking available and there is no charge.

We stopped on the free parking lot at the bottom of the roche de Solutre . Very impressive to see, especially with the vineyards surrounding it.
But the climb all the way up was too much for us, and we were not very interested in the prehistoric museum.

We first climbed Solutre about 35 years ago before it became quite such a tourist hot spot and before as much was known about the Neolothic context. Suffice it to saythat it was a lot tougher this time; if you have any mobility issues take care and wear stout shoes along with a stick/walking poles, a sun hat depending on weather, and a supply of water and take it very steady. Leave the "up and down in ten minutes" boasting to the fit young stags! That said the views over the vineyards and the nearby villages were as good as we had remembered and the hike is as rewarding as all those years ago.

This is about 30 min walk from the free car parks to the top. A little steep but pretty straightforward stuff. Great views on the way up and at the top.

The views from La Roche de Solutre are fantastic. Even driving up to the site and seeing the rolling hills full of vineyards makes the trip worthwhile. Take the time to check out the small, but well-organized museum at the base of the cliff that explains the importance and significance of this archeological site. The rock is one of the 'Grand Sites de France' both as a geographical phenomenon and as a prehistoric site. Prehistoric remains found here have led to the rock giving its name to a distinct culture of the Upper Paleolithic period (20000-16000 BC). There is also a nice welcome center and coffee/souvenir shop near the base of the Rock.

Solutre-Pouilly is a small wine-producing village in the region of Bourgogne in eastern France. The village is surrounded by a vineyard in a scenic setting dominated by the famous local geological feature: the Rock of Solutré. The “Rock” is a huge limestone cliff that rises above the village. If you are in the region to discover and taste the fine wines of Burgundy, this is a great area to start.

The Roche de Solutre is a must-see for the Burgundy area. This is an easy hike with amazing views along the way and at the top. We did not stop in the museum areas, just made the ascent and enjoyed the peaceful views of the surrounding countryside.

You head South from Beaune, past the renowned vineyards of Chassagne, Puligny, etc. till you hit Santenay, Town square, with a fountain (healing waters, they claim). Up a side street the homes of vintners, with, in the garage, an upended wine barrel for informal tastings. Found Antoine Olivier, who poured us samples of his white Santenay, Le Bievaux. A charming, ebullient mouthful of joy, dry yet opulent, the flavors of the grape, the earth, the sun and the rain all combining to bring the tears to your eyes. AND...he spoke English!

This rock was used in the Neolithic era to provide shelter to a community that lived there. The vil;age has provided much information on the residents of that time. There are many unanswered questions such as why a herd of horses plummeted over the top in 600 CE. Francois Mitterrand made this site famous as he climbed it once a year during his presidency of France.
