If you are walking around the headland from the promenade to the harbour area you will see this memorial. It is large and very imposing and well worth seeing but I would not make a special journey to it unless you had personal reasons to do so.

This ia a breath taking monument carved into the side of Castle Hill to honour the 4000 dead veterans that came from Nice and fought in the 1st World War. It has to be seen to be believed.

The monument is HUGE, and it is very convenient to get to, as it is placed on a walking path between the Port and the Promenade des Anglaise. Quick place to stop and get a few photos. You can also see it quite well on the hour long Nice cruise.

The WWI monument is stunning and carved right into the rock. It’s truly a beautiful tribute and worth stopping to see if you’re in Nice.

Verdict: 4/5
Time: Less than 15 mins

About: This monument was build in the 1920s in honor of France's World War I heroes. It is one of the largest war monuments in France.

My visit: Have been there while passing by on the hop on hop of bus, and while driving by from Monaco to the hotel. Perhaps will visit on a future trip.

Located along the promenade leading to the harbor east of the old town, this impressive monument to the Nice war casualties of several conflicts is carved in to the east face of the castle hill, and is fronted by a small park that insulates it from the traffic and crowds on the sea side. Take some time from the hustle and bustle to admire the sculptures and reflect on all those who served and didn't make it home again.

Just a short walk down the promenade takes you to this enormous monument carved out of the mountain. Take time to revere the war dead commemorated here, and be grateful for their sacrifice for the world we enjoy today.

An impressive monument to the fallen of WWI. Situated below Castle Hill and just round from the main stretch of the Promenade des Anglais. Worth the short walk.

Heading on foot along the coastal walkway toward the Port de Nice, we came to this distinctive monument built into the rock at the base of Castle Hill. Made of white marble, it is about 105-feet high and features a giant dome-shaped urn with columns beneath three arches. Bas reliefs appear on its base.

Completed in 1928, the huge monument honors the almost 4,000 Nice residents, who died in WW I. Additional names have been added to the memorial to include WW II conflicts in Indochina and Algeria. Small marble blocks flank the monument and recognize war units, such as the Marines and Artillery.

We sat for a while and watched the monument -- one of the largest cenotaphs in France -- glow in the early afternoon sun. It was a moving scene and perfectly located, looking out to sea.
