- retireeVancouverVancouver, Canada1,828 contributionsPhoto stopThere are quite a few stairs to reach the entrance of the church from the Place des Palace - the cobbled square in front of the church and Popes' Palace. The sculpture of Christ on the cross surrounded by a few of His fellow mourners has a prominent place on the spacious entrance to the church. However, the golden Madonna on the church tower, very visible from afar, is more of a marker for the church. The white interior is quite simple as is the altar. The side chapel with Benedict XII's tomb is Baroque and dark. I just needed time for a few photos inside. There were no beautiful sculptures around the church entrance - just a covered porch in Romanesque style. Any wall frescoes seen were not memorable. Probably the exterior of the church is the most photographed.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 November 2023

The interior is not that interesting but was a nice place to sit down and rest from the heat outside. Adjacent to Palace of Popes and easy to think it is one of the same. Perched atop a hill, this historic cathedral not only offers a deep dive into the region's rich religious history but also provides some of the most spectacular views in the area. As the sun begins to set, the view from Notre-Dame des Doms becomes truly magical. The sweeping panorama of the Rhône River, the Pont d'Avignon, and the distant hills is bathed in a warm, golden light that creates a breathtaking backdrop. The changing colors of the sky and the landscape as the sun dips below the horizon make for an unforgettable experience, perfect for capturing stunning photographs or simply soaking in the beauty. The cathedral itself is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, with its intricate details and serene interior adding to the overall experience. The peaceful ambiance within the church provides a lovely contrast to the vibrant colors of the sunset outside. Whether you're an avid photographer or simply looking to enjoy a tranquil moment, Notre-Dame des Doms during sunset is a truly magical experience. I have to admit for such an emblematic and important building, I was expecting a much more ornate Cathedral. Despite being somewhat underwhelmed by its interior, it’s still worth visiting.
Make sure you visit the adjoining gardens afterwards for lovely views of the Rhône.

Cool place to rest tired feet during a heat wave in August. Free to enter, very interesting interior. See the palace, then the cathedral, and end with a walk up to the park to the lookout point of the Avignon bridge.

I am not Catholic (Protestant) but decided to dress appropriately and attend part of the mass. First time for me and it was special. Also the beautiful sound of the clock chiming before every 15 minutes. It is a pity that some tourists do not show enough respect during the service- talking, dressed in very short shorts and one person even jiggling some coins, for what reason only he will know. A church is for me a sacred place and the singing especially part of it.

In the same large Place du Palais that belonged at the times to the Avignon Papacy and now
is a beautiful public space, we found the gorgeous cathedral of Avignon, called Cathedral Notre-Dame des Doms.It is a Roman Catholic cathedral and a national monument of France.
It is situated a little bit above the Palais des Papes and is a seat of the Archbishop of Avignon.
The building is very well maintained and preserved, since it dates from 12th century. The surroundings are also beautiful, all these gardens full of the flowers and the trees. Good enough for taking some walk and photos. As to the architecture, it is a Romanesque edifice with central tower and a prominent gilded statue of the Virgin Mary atop that overlooks the town. Very impressive at the dusk.

The Cathedrale de Notre-Dame des Doms sits high above the enormous square in front of the Papal Palace and is almost dwarfed in comparison. The approach is via a series of stairways that zig-zag upwards winding their way past a former palace that today houses the museum, and the Promenade du Rochers-des-Doms gardens. The view of the square below is wonderful from the front of the cathedral. Inside, the church is lovely and quiet with elaborate papal tombs in stark comparison to the earlier Romanesque arches. In the sanctuary is a papal throne reminding all of the years when the Roman popes were in exile here.
If you can manage to get somebody to open the Treasury, you will be rewarded with an assortment of liturgical treasures. There are splendid vestments, monstrances, chalices, pectoral crosses, and other artifacts.
The church is well worth a visit.

Surprisingly non-flashy place considering it must have been frequented by popes for centuries, and indeed hosting a pope tomb (Benedict xx). Beautiful angel statues at the altar; altogether, the alcoves are more interesting than the main nave.

This is a small cathedral where locals worship, tucked between the papal palace and the gardens above it. There is original paint still on the ceiling, and while we were there a nun was leading singing in one of the side prayer chapels. Small gift shop as you exit to help with upkeep. Nice, quiet space, to enjoy a reflective moment in the hustle and bustle of tourist Avignon.
