This museum is a superb visit if only for the Roman barge. There isn't much information in English but, it's still worth a visit. The artifacts speak for themselves and the models tell the story well.

This museum is now located a short walk from the old town in a large modern building. It has a great collection of artefacts from the past especially the Roman past of the area. There are some wonderful things to see but as others say the Roman river barge and its contents are the highlight. Whilst it helps to understand... More

If you want to go inside obtain at least the 'Liberty' city pass which allows you 4 attraction entrances plus 2 museums from the TI in town. We spent a little more-15€ and got a pass (Advantage pass) good for everything (except Foundation Van Gogh which is not covered in any city pass). As for the attraction, there is a... More

It's a little out of the way if yo are walking around, but don't miss this museum. It brings home the ancient antecedents of Arles and helps place the various monuments you have been viewing.

The Roman river barge is the undoubted highlight because it is so unusual. However there are also lots of other good exhibits including those relating to milling and funerary artefacts. All are well displayed and well described. Overall the museum is spacious and airy. On foot best reached along the Rhone path. Care - there is no cafe

We were absolutely blown away by the Roman barge found so nearby in the Rhone. There's a good roughly 20 minute video about its discovery, salvage and preservation that's in French with English subtitles. We flinched when they showed them sawing the boat to get it out of the water after it had lain intact for almost 2000 years! Take... More

This was a find. There is a barge recovered from the Rhone which dates back to the 1st century - amazing. Mosaics and sarcophagus a great couple of hours

We loved this museum. It's so well laid out and the signage is very good. The collection is massive. I particularly loved the Roman style gardens.

The museum was the last site we visited in Arles and it was stunning. The connection between Rome and Arles was explained very well, with beautiful models of the famous buildings. And then...the boat. It looks so complete: then grain of the wood, the cargo, frozen in time for the fascination of modern civilisation. At the far end there is... More

This is a modern building with many amazing Roman artifacts. It's definitely a place to learn about the history of Arles and what life was like during the time when the Romans ruled Arles. There is a boat that was discovered in the Rhone River from Roman times and a video describes the intricate process of bringing it up and... More
