We walked the gray streets of Arles, searching for Vincent’s Cafe, and as we turned the corner we were pleasantly surprised. We had read Rick Steve’s’ assessment that it was overpriced and a tourist trap. Not true. We found a free table and asked the waiter for two coffees. I asked my partner to finds Steve’s’ review and she read it while we enjoyed our coffee. We then order a Pastis and enjoyed it very much. The square was beautiful. We were there in April of last year and the day was a bit gray. I’m an oil painter from Southern New Mexico, and love Van Gogh’s work. We didn’t find it expensive and the staff was as expected - French.

The square is not large. On one side is the famed Hotel Nord Pinus. It includes a statue of Frederic Mistral, the co-recipient of the 1904 Nobel Prize for Literature. There are some decent restaurants on its perimeter.

We went a couple of times during our stay in Arles because there are several restaurants and the square provides a great background for a romantic dinner.

Place du Forum is a lovely public space. There are many outdoor tables with seating for the numerous cafes and restaurants in the area. The Forum has quite a long history going back to the Roman times. The Forum used to be much bigger but today most of it has been built over. It is still a beautiful place to visit and have a great time.

Place du Forum is located in a nice square in the center of Arles. It is famous because of Van Gogh’s painting of the Yellow Cafe. It’s a good place to sit and relax and take in the atmosphere.

My husband and I were visiting Arles during a river cruise of the French Rivera. We were fortunate to have had an English-speaking local tour guide who provided us with the history of Arles and an opportunity to visit and photograph the area.

According to available literature, "Forum Square (Place du Forum) in Arles, France was made depicted in a famous painting of a bright yellow cafe done by Vincent Van Gogh. The square was originally the site of a Roman Forum that marked the center of political and social life in Arles.

"Now Place du Forum is filled with lively restaurant terraces under the shade of plane trees, and takes on extra meaning because Vincent van Gogh set his easel in northeast corner of the square to paint Cafe Terrace at Night in 1888. Come in the morning when the tables are empty to spend a moment with the statue of Frederic Mistral, the Nobel Prize winning author who lived and worked close to Arles."

This was a wonderful experience with amazing photographic opportunities. Don't miss this leisurely walk.

The main reason for visiting this square is to see the 'Yellow Cafe', made famous by Van Gogh. There are a number of restaurants nearby, but of course everyone wants to stand where Van Gogh stood to paint the scene

The square where Van Gogh made one of his most famous pictures, other than that this place has nothing else. If Van Gogh not made a picture of it even would not be so famous

We love all of the outside restaurants set up in the plaza. So many people to watch and so many good selections of food to choose from! In the evenings there is also live music to listen to; making this a very enjoyable place to be!

The whole of this area was full of people eating and drinking during La Feria. The atmosphere was brilliant. Late in the evening people were dancing to the many brass bands on nearly every corner, even in very narrow streets. It was like a big street party. Well worth a visit.
